Wine Advocate
Equal parts Meunier, Pinot, and barrel-matured Chardonnay, the Aubry 2006 Brut Aubry de Humbert displays superb grip, energy, pungency and invigorating tang of lemon and grapefruit with prominence of their pips and rinds; sourdough yeast and buckwheat; white pepper and salt. To a richly ripe, pit-tinged peach and cherry fruit component is added an entirely noble fungal one, completing layers of flavor that undulate with vibratory intensity. This leaves my palate stimulated to the point of super-charge, while my imagination tries to encompass its wide-ranging complexity. Particularly worth noting is the seamless and discreet manner in which the barrel component – more prominent in some of the other Aubry cuvees tasted alongside – has integrated itself (though admittedly there is at least marginally less Chardonnay here to act as bearer than in those others). I suspect that impressive though it is today, this cuvee will fascinate all the more in a couple of years and be worth following for 4-6. What’s more, by Champagne standards, it must be counted an amazing value. Twin brothers Pierre and Philippe Aubry are best-known for their cuvees rendered from the full range of cepages authorized for Champagne; in other words, for their having tracked down, propagated, and showcased the “forgotten” alternatives to the proverbial trio. I have been enjoying their wines sporadically for half a dozen years, and my – on this occasion – first systematic canvassing of most of their line simply strengthened my belief that over and beyond the excellence and intrigue of their varietally exotic cuvees, the Aubrys ought to already be known for perpetrating some of Champagne’s most startlingly distinctive and profoundly delicious wines, period.

AUBRY CHAMPANGE

Pierre and Philippe Aubry, descendants of a wine-growing family, have shouldered a legacy dating from 1790, with 16.5 hectares from 60 individual locations.

Pierre with diploma in enology and Philippe in biology, have revitalised their family's centuries of productive experience, launching a company which has quickly established itself as one of the most renowned and revered creators of French Champagne.

The grapes are divided into five classes according to their quality, and a considerable amount is vinified in old, traditional 205-liter oak barrels. But, the most remarkable thing about Aubry is that, through almost archaeological search for old plant varieties, they have succeeded in making a brilliant Champagne out of three forgotten grape types: Pinot Gris, Arbanne, and Petit Meslier. Furthermore many grapevines are planted “en foule,” as they were before phylloxera.
