This fantastic wine from Bodega 4 Kilos on Mallorca is 2016 made from 100% Callet grapes. The elegant and balanced palate is fresh and fluid, with very fine tannins, and while light it also has stuffing.

Origin of Wine name

4Kilos (or 4 million pesetas) was the initial investment made by Francesc Grimalt and Sergio Caballero, the partners of the recently created Mallorcan cellar 4 Kilos Vinícola SL. A modest investment for this sector that demonstrates that a good wine doesn't necessarily depend upon a great economic effort but an ambition for quality and a passion for the product. 4Kilos is unmistakeable in its signature and a declaration of principles.

"The 2012 version of their eponymous 4 Kilos is a blend of Callet with 10% Manto Negro. This represents quite a change from the 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Callet and 10% Merlot used in the 2010. The blend changed in 2011, and grapes are sourced from three different vineyards, two in their village, Felanix, on clay-rich soils and a third vineyard in Binissalem where the soils are rich in chalk and it's where the Manto Negro is grown. Half of the wine fermented in stainless-steel vats and the other half in 2,500-liter oak vats aged for one year in 225- and 600-liter French oak barrels.

Bright ruby-colored with a nose of beef blood, iron, Mediterranean herbs, aniseed and raspberries. The elegant and balanced palate is fresh and fluid, with very fine tannins, and while light it also has stuffing.

I had a preview of the 2013 that will be bottled in February. They like the wines to spend two winters maturing before bottling. They introduced some fine-tuning changes in this vintage. It looks really fresh and showy and will be be something to look out for in a few more months, as they sell their wines pretty quickly. 16,000 bottles were produced".

Without a doubt, the number-one producer in that style is 4 Kilos . They have been fine-tuning the way they work every year. Their viticulture is very sophisticated, they work organically and their knowledge of agriculture and viticulture is impressive. They are really serious but often fly below the radar, perhaps because they’ve been around for a while, even from the times of riper, more concentrated and oakier wines, so some people might not realize how much their wines have changed and improved in the last few years.

Cellar history

In August of 2006, Francesc Grimalt and Sergio Caballero set up 4Kilos Wines in Mallorca, a company dedicated to producing wines that reflect the strength of the grape and its nuances but with a different approach and different presentation.

Francesc Grimalt, winemaker and former partner and technician of the Anima Negra Cellar in Mallorca, is known mainly for rescuing the variety of the native grape Callet on the Balearic wine scene. Sergio Caballero is musician and founding partner and co-director of the Sonar festival of advanced music and multi media arts, and who is responsible for its image.

In late September of 2006 in the garage of a fellow winegrower and with few resources but with excellent grapes, 4kilos produced its first wine.The fermentation and maceration of the wine was undertaken in milk refrigeration units, which thanks to their form create a large, surface area of skin pulp. The remaining 50% is produced in open barrels of 225. The wine was raised for fourteen months and was launched onto the market in May 2008.

In 2007 alongside Apolonia Viticultors -Balearic Agrarian society- they converted a former sheep farm into a small winery. There they were able to produce the crop for 4Kilos 2007 and their new project 12Volts 2007 that after twelve months in the barrel will be launched onto the market at the beginning of 2009.

Their concept is not only that of variety but of the importance of the combination of strain-soil-climate-growth. From the offset they have been supported by winegrowers, very important when attempting to make rational viticulture and respect the environment. In many vineyards native vegetation cover is used in order to obtain more concentrated grapes, better ground porosity and increased microbial population.

The vineyards are located in different parts of the north and south of Mallorca, the reason for which being that they do not belong to any particular D.O. The strains are planted mostly in soils Cal Vermell a popular name to describe the Franco clay soil. The varieties that are grown are Callet, Cabernet, Sauvignon, French Fogoneu, Merlot, Monastrell and Shyra.

4Kilos Wines was set up in Mallorca 2006 by Francesc Grimalt and Sergio Caballero-dedicated to produce wines with a different approach and different presentation. 

Francesc Grimalt, is winemaker and former partner and technician of the Anima Negra Cellar in Mallorca. Sergio Caballero, is responsible for 4Kilos image and is founding partner and co-director of the Sonar festival, advanced music and multi media arts.

With few resources but with excellent grapes they produced its first wine in the garage of a fellow winegrower using stainless steel milk tanks. An old sheep barn was later converted into a winery. There they were able to produce the crop for 4Kilos 2007 and later 12Volts.

The name 4Kilos comes from the initial investment of 4 million pesetas (currency prior to euro) by both partners. Which demonstrates that a good wine does not depend on a great economic effort but an ambition for quality and a passion for the product.
