Caiarossa IGT Toscana Rosso 2016

Rött vin från Toscana Italien

The bouquet presents a beautiful first wave of dark fruit that pushes the limits of ripeness but remains safely within the realm of elegance. The aromas are balanced and focused with blackberry, cassis, and light touches of salty or rusty mineral. The wine is not too constructed or big in the mouth, rather is shows a delicate level of elegances that absolutely seals the deal.

Tasting notes Caiarossa 2010,

Bright deep ruby. Enticing aromas of dark red cherry, sweet pipe tobacco, aromatic spices and mocha, plus a strong note of vanilla. Rich and dense on the palate, with rich, ripe red cherry and smoky herb flavors supported by oak-driven tannins on the smooth, long finish.

96/100
Robert Parker: Shows a delicate level of elegances that absolutely seals the deal.
This wine is a blend of seven grapes—42% Cabernet Franc, 25% Merlot, 15.5% Syrah, 6% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Petit Verdot, 4.5% Sangiovese and 1% Alicante. This vintage sees a slightly higher percentage of Cabernet Franc than usual, but I am told that the 2018 edition will see more Syrah instead. Some 57,000 bottles were made.

James Suckling: Very complex aromas of crushed berries
Very complex aromas of crushed berries, yet the fresh herbs, dried berries, sandalwood and Spanish cedar add complexity and brightness. Full-bodied with tannins that melt into the wine. Savory. Cabernet franc, merlot, syrah, cabernet sauvignon and petit verdot with a touch of alicante and sangiovese. Better after 2021.

History

To trace a definitive line between poetry and technique is impossible. The tangible reality of oenological and viticultural competence mix indissolubly with the beauty and emotions which  our estate, this place, gives us with its colors and aromas, inspiring our estate’s vision of the world.

The company logo is represented by an ancient clay head of Etruscan origin representing the Greek god Dionysus and dating from the fourth century B.C., discovered near the city of Volterra and now the property of Eric Albada Jelgersma.

God of vegetation and of wine, particularly linked to the vital lymph, the first-born of the cosmos, and to the liberation of the senses, it is the perfect representation of what we wish to transmit with our wines.

The name of Caiarossa was coined as a homage to the soil, which is characterized by the presence of jasper, rock and pebbles intensely red in color. A creative name inspired by Gaia, mother of all the gods of Mount Olympus, goddess of fertility and of Nature, of the very Earth itself.

Our story began in 1998, taking as its guide the principles of organic agriculture for the cultivation of the vineyards and that of geo-dynamics and the oriental discipline of Feng Shui for the construction of the cellars.

Vineyards

Our vineyards map: at the current moment Cairossa owns 175 acres (70 hectares) of land, half of which occupied by oak, cork oak, and holm oak woods. The first 40 acres (16 hectares) of vineyards were planted between 1998 and 2000 and, following an ample series of soil sampling and analysis, it became evident that the soil composition was quite varied: calcareous at lower altitudes, rich in sandstone and sand, iron-rich at higher altitudes. An additional 37 acres (15 hectares) were planted between 2008 and 2013 on the southern slopes of the Nocolino hill, a site a few kilometers away from the center of Riparbella with clayey soils.

The search for grapes which could express themselves at maximum levels on these soils led to a selection of seven red grape varieties: Sangiovese, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, Alicante, and Syrah along with three white grape varieties: Viognier, Chardonnay, and Petit Manseng.

But it was in the year 2004, when it was acquired by Eric Albada Jelgersma, that Cairossa entered the world of quality wine thanks to the decades of experience which this family had acquired with two Grands Crus Classés in Margaux, Bordeaux, Château Giscours and Château du Tertre.
