Wine Spectator

Shows succulent raspberry pâte de fruit and plum puree notes that glide through, with lively anise and black tea hints. Reveals a subtle apple wood accent on the finish, along with a sanguine thread. Silky and persistent. Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre and Cinsault.

The base 2020 Châteauneuf Du Pape from this estate checks in as 78% Grenache, 14% Syrah, and 8% Mourvèdre. Its ruby/purple hue is followed by a ripe, incredibly sexy, medium-bodied beauty with lots of kirsch and blackberry fruits, notes of toasted spice and peppery garrigue, silky tannins, a good mid-palate, and outstanding length. Drink this pleasure-bent, balanced, gorgeous effort any time over the coming 10-12 years or so.

Tasted as a representative blend (the wine was still in wood when I visited), the 2020 Chateauneuf du Pape looks a step off the pace of the fine 2019. Cedar notes accent blackberry fruit in this medium to full-bodied blend of 77.5% Grenache, 14% Syrah and 8.5% Mourvèdre, but note that it's likely to vary a bit once the final blend is made.

One of the appellation's great success stories, Chateau de Vaudieu has blossomed under the leadership of Laurent Brechet and the consultantship of Philippe Cambie. It remains to be seen how the wine style might evolve now that Cambie has passed away, but the vintages reviewed this year reflect a master at the height of his talent. A large estate with some well-situated vineyards, Brechet farms 70 hectares, including 10 hectares devoted to white varieties, a rather large proportion when compared against the average for the appellation. Winemaking has been fairly straightforward. The whites are whole-bunch pressed to tank and go into wood once the fermentation (with inoculated yeasts) is underway. The reds are 100% destemmed (but some trials are commencing with whole-bunch ferments), fermented using indigenous yeasts (barring any problems) and spend about a month on skins before being pressed off. In the vineyards, trials are underway to carefully thin leaves to slow sugar accumulation, so physiological ripeness might occur at lower sugar levels.

I den västra delen av Côtes de Provence driver Bréchet Château de la Coulerette, som har en vingård på 60 hektar (148 tunnland), varav en del faller under underappellationen La Londe.
