E Pira-Chiara Boschis Barolo Mosconi 2015

Rött vin från Piemonte Italien

97 points
Aromatic depth here, drawing you in with cascading layers of flowers and leaves, fresh-tilled earth laced with woody spices, white pepper and fresh red fruit. The palate carries a very sturdy frame of fine, dense tannins. This is placed in the top league of 2015 Barolo wines. Long and succulent build through the finish. Try from 2024.

The winery is situated in the town of Barolo and the winery faces the Piazza del Peso, Where via Monforte e la via Vittorio Veneto (so-called Via Nuova) meet. From here, looking to the hills, one can understand the amount of work that is necessary to transform the looked after gardens of town to the steep hillside vineyards that are neccessary to obtain grapes of grand quality.
The winery vinifies only the grapes provided by the estate vineyards, about 2 1/2 hectates, situated in some of best zones of the Barolo area: 2 hectares in locality Cannubi and Cannubi San Lorenzo, the rest in locality Via Nuova (Collina Terlo); the zone most known per the grape Nebbiolo that becomes Barolo.

As a top producer, Chiara Boschis, is always seeking to produce high quality and innovative wines that are elegantly balanced wines along with traditional structure and austerity. To further this effort she started to vinify separately the vineyards, Cannubi and Vian Nuova, to best show their individual characteristics.

E. Pira & Figli - key player in the history of Barolo

E. Pira & Figli (Chiara Boschis) is a small wine estate in Barolo. It makes a range of single-vineyard Nebbiolo wines from several of the Barolo crus, as well as a Barbera d'Alba and a Dolcetto d'Alba.

The Pira were an ancient family of winemakers. At the end of the 19th century they started to produce and bottling wine and received immediate recognition for quality. The estate was passed from father to son for centuries until the late 1980’s when Luigi Pira passed away. Hoping to keep the tradition alive the the E. Pira & Figli estate was the passed on to the Boschis family,  long and good friends of the Pira’s. Since then, continuity has been guaranteed by Chiara Boschis and her parents Franco and Ida, representing a historic family of Barolo producers from the 1700s.

In a region where women winemakers are far from the norm Chiara Boschis. she seemed to revolutionize the style of Barolo significantly. In 1990 she helped the winery to international recognition and she has built a collection of wines that is the envy of many.. As a winemaker, she is a master of balance, crafting finessed and sophisticated wines that are some of the most aromatically dynamic expressions of Barolo today, with her wines  regularly garnering high praise from international publications.

In 2010, Chiara’s younger brother Giorgio decided to join her in the vineyards as well as in the cellar. The work on the vines, strictly manual, is carried out with extreme care and respect for the environment, following the dictates of organic cultivation, for which the company is certified since the 2014 harvest. Production is very limited,  about 1,200 cases of Barolo each year, from direct production grapes.

The name Chiara Boschis, features prominently on the label of E. Pira & Figli's wine labels. This is to reduce any chance of confusion with the other Barolo producers Pira and Pira Luigi.
