Fattoria Le Pupille Morellino Di Scansano Riserva DOCG 2017

Elisabetta Geppetti ‘They call her the Lady of Morellino and the Ambassador of Maremma. She has been the first woman to be the president of a consortium in 1992, year of foundation of the Morellino di Scansano Consortium. The german headliner Der Feinschmecker proclaimed her ‘Wine-maker of the year’ a few years back.  

A succession of gentle hills watching over the majestic contour of the Monte Amiata. It’s precisely from one of these soft and sensual hills that the story of Fattoria Le Pupille begins and leads it to how it is seen today: a heterogenous reality. In the course of the years, the originating core of the winery effectively enriched itself of new grape particles, reaching today 75 hectares of vineyards, distributed like many mosaic pieces between many stunning areas of Maremma. Another 20 hectares are destined to the olives, and then cereals and cork oaks alternate with pastures reaching up to 420 hectares of overall property.

The operating nucleus of the property, from early 2000, is in proximity of Istia d’Ombrone, nearby Grosseto. The property is an antique farmhouse and its silhouette is present in some of the most recognizable wine labels of Le Pupille, the whole winery is surrounded by a 12 hectares vineyard, including a small patch destined to an experimentation of old Sangiovese grapes, coming from ancient vine rows. At first it is difficult to imagine that this large, quiet house is the beating heart of an agricultural activity, it rather seems like a noble residency surrounded by a large english style lawn and a myriad of flowers. Then the smell of must reveals the presence of a winery hidden by ivy, and once one enters the well-finished environment, the offices and tasting room appear like a succession of drawing rooms that the house owner has made to be warm and welcoming  

Fattoria Le Pupille, är en liten familjegård nära Scansano i den toskanska provinsen Grosseto, Italien. När Elisabetta Geppetti tog över tyglarna började hon en ny grund av egendomens vingård, med en modern och entreprenöriell vinodling. Hon återplanterade Cabernet Sauvignon på några vinrankor av Sangiovese, och med tekniskt stöd från Giacomo Tachis producerade hon den första officiella etiketten 'Morellino Riserva 1978' 1982. Fem år senare var det dags för vingårdens numera legendariska vin Saffredi, som hon tillägnar sin far som aldrig kunde dricka av vinerna som han ursprungligen planterade från vingårdarna. Köpet 1996 av vingården Poggio Valente, i Pereta nära Scansano, gav en ännu viktigare vändning till vingården.

1992 var Elisabetta den första kvinnan som var ordförande för ett konsortium, Morellino di Scansano Consortium. Den inflytelserika samtida tidskriften Der Feinschmecker utropade henne till "Årets vinmakare" för några år sedan. Elisabetta, har lyckats bygga en av de viktigaste vingårdarna i Toscana, sida vid sida med att sköta fem barn. Idag har hennes förstfödda Clara anslutit sig till henne i vingårdsbranschen. Gårdsvingårdarna på 75 hektar är fördelade som mosaikbitar mellan många fantastiska områden i Maremma, medan oliver, korkekar och spannmål utgör resten av fastighetens totalt 420 hektar. Fattoria Le Pupille skapar eleganta och fina viner inspirerade av franska superstjärnor men med druvsorter odlade på den kuperade delen av Maremma.

Sensory Analysis: The ruby red colour is intense and revived by slight purple reflections, which exalt its shine. The scent is full of red fruits, amongst which are most noticeable marasca cherry typical of Sangiovese; they all evolve in interesting balsamic aromas and slight notes of sweet spices emerge.

In the mouth the fineness of the tannins balances the softness, making the wine harmonious and pleasantly persistent.

Matches: Excellent for first courses with elaborate sauces, second courses with red meat or wild fowl, and seasoned cheeses with mustards.
