Saffredi is the icon of Fattoria Le Pupille. A wine which owes his birth to the desires and intuitions of
Elisabetta, who with the precious help of Giacomo Tachis, wanted to make a great wine in Maremma,
a place which until then hadn’t relished in any fame related to the success of its wines. Elisabetta
wanted to dedicate this wine to Fredi, the man who inspired her passion for wine.

Sensory Analysis: The ruby red colour is impenetrable, with crimson reflections, which characterize this important wine. The majestic body is highlighted already by its density in the glass.

The scents are of red fruits, redcurrant and blackberry, blending with the spicy aromas of clove, cinnamon and a light fragrance of vanilla.

In the taste, the rotund and velvety body wraps up all senses and it balances with an excellent tannin strength. The long persistence allows to fully relish the aromatic complexity upon which the spices predominate

Matches: Perfect for important and elaborate courses, red meat and wild fowl.

Wow, there is a very impressive freshness here that defies the heat of this vintage. The 2017 Saffredi does not seem like a 2017 at all. Now celebrating its 30th birthday, Saffredi is 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot and 10% Petit Verdot. Thanks to the vineyard's proximity to the sea, leaving leaves on the vines and the sharp diurnal shifts of the area, the fruit was able to ripen in a balanced manner despite the hot and dry summer. The team at Fattoria le Pupille knew they would have to be ready to harvest early and lose some their yields, and they did. In the end, production was down 25%, but the result is a fresh, thick and beautiful red made with ripe fruit and dark concentration. This is a great effort from Fattoria le Pupille. This wine will be released in November.

Gorgeous blackberries, dark chocolate, spice and lightly roasted coffee. Full body. Layered and creamy. Lovely, silky tannins that melt into the wine. A beautiful red from the vintage with class and finesse to the depth of fruit. Drink or hold.

Elisabetta Geppetti ‘They call her the Lady of Morellino and the Ambassador of Maremma. She has been the first woman to be the president of a consortium in 1992, year of foundation of the Morellino di Scansano Consortium. The german headliner Der Feinschmecker proclaimed her ‘Wine-maker of the year’ a few years back.  

A succession of gentle hills watching over the majestic contour of the Monte Amiata. It’s precisely from one of these soft and sensual hills that the story of Fattoria Le Pupille begins and leads it to how it is seen today: a heterogenous reality. In the course of the years, the originating core of the winery effectively enriched itself of new grape particles, reaching today 75 hectares of vineyards, distributed like many mosaic pieces between many stunning areas of Maremma. Another 20 hectares are destined to the olives, and then cereals and cork oaks alternate with pastures reaching up to 420 hectares of overall property.

The operating nucleus of the property, from early 2000, is in proximity of Istia d’Ombrone, nearby Grosseto. The property is an antique farmhouse and its silhouette is present in some of the most recognizable wine labels of Le Pupille, the whole winery is surrounded by a 12 hectares vineyard, including a small patch destined to an experimentation of old Sangiovese grapes, coming from ancient vine rows. At first it is difficult to imagine that this large, quiet house is the beating heart of an agricultural activity, it rather seems like a noble residency surrounded by a large english style lawn and a myriad of flowers. Then the smell of must reveals the presence of a winery hidden by ivy, and once one enters the well-finished environment, the offices and tasting room appear like a succession of drawing rooms that the house owner has made to be warm and welcoming

The Fattoria Le Pupille  

Fattoria Le Pupille, is a small family estate near Scansano in the Tuscan province of Grosseto, Italy. When Elisabetta Geppetti took over the reins  she began a re-foundation of the estates winery, with a modern and entrepreneurial viticultural. She replanted  Cabernet Sauvignon on a few vines of Sangiovese, and with the technical support of Giacomo Tachis, she produced the  first official label ‘Morellino Riserva 1978’ in 1982. Five years later it was time for the  winery’s now legendary wine Saffredi, which she  dedicated to her father who was never able to drink from the wines which vineyards he planted originally. The purchase in 1996 of the Poggio Valente vineyard, in Pereta near Scansano, gave an even more important turn to the winery.

In 1992 Elisabetta was the first woman to be the president of a consortium, the Morellino di Scansano Consortium. The influential contemporary magazine Der Feinschmecker, proclaimed her ‘Wine-maker of the year’ a few years ago.  Elisabetta, has succeeded to build one of the most important wineries in Tuscany, side by side of managing five children. Today her firstborn Clara, has joined her in the winery business.The estate vineyards 75 hectares, are distributed like mosaic pieces between many stunning areas of Maremma, while olives, cork oaks and cereals constitute the rest of the property’s  totally  420 hectares. Fattoria Le Pupille creates elegant and fine wines inspired from French super stars but with grape varieties grown on the hilly part of Maremma.
