Somehow I didn't taste the 2017 Hacienda Monasterio, but I did taste the 2017 Reserva, which is quite impressive for such a challenging year in Ribera del Duero. They suffered less from the frost on the property, which is quite warm and usually frost-free. The wine has a seductive nose that combines raspberries and cranberries with herbs and flowers. It's ripe at 15% alcohol, but it does not show heat or alcohol. This is 80% to 82% Tinto Fino and the rest Cabernet Sauvignon that matured in barrel for some 20 months. It's medium to full-bodied, juicy, rich and velvety, with fine, chalky tannins. The wine really transcends the challenges of the vintage and delivers more than I expected. 35,000 bottles produced.

In 2017, they had less effect from the frost than the majority of places since it's a warm place. 2017 was warm, and the wine is ripe. The Reserva Especial is from 2015, a very warm and ripe vintage where the challenge was to keep the freshness in the wines.

Barrel ageing: 19 months

TASTING NOTE DATED ON FEBRUARY 2018:

The color is intense and bright, red almost opaque.
The aromas are very fruity, complex and minerals, with toasted notes provided during the barrel aging.

The mouth is soft and pleasant, but the structure is intense with sweet tannins.
The final is long and persistent with a large presence of black ripe fruit.
This wine has a great structure and a promising aging potential.


Hacienda Monasterio

Hacienda Monasterio räknas idag som en av de bästa vinproducenterna i Ribera del Duero. Bodegan grundades 1990 då den danske vinmakaren Peter Sisseck tog över driften och planteringen av vingården.

Hacienda Monasterios vingårdar är planterade längs sydsluttningar i Duerodalen mellan städerna Pesquera och Valbuena del Duero. Vingårdarna är ekologiskt certifierade och täcker ca 108 hektar med druvorna Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot och liten del Malbec. Man selekterar hårt i vingårdarna innan skörd och tar ut endast 20 – 30 hl per hektar. Man jäser och macererar musten med skalkontakt i 30 dagar. Vinet får därefter mogna i 19 månader på franska Allier ekfat varav 30% är nya och 70% är två år gamla.
