Jeb Dunnuck: This beauty comes from a single block of a mountain site located north of the Fort Ross-Seaview
One of the standouts in this stacked lineup is the 2016 Pinot Noir Far Coast Vineyard. This beauty comes from a single block of a mountain site located north of the Fort Ross-Seaview AVA. Aged 17 months in 37% new French oak, this is a ripe, sexy, and powerful wine that’s loaded with notions of ripe strawberries, kirsch, shrimp stock, spice, and hints of ground coffee. With building tannins, full body, beautiful depth of fruit, and an incredible texture, this magical Pinot Noir will compete with any wine coming out of California today. Drink it over the coming decade.
Robert Parker
The 2018 Pinot Noir Far Coast Vineyard was aged for 16 months in French oak barrels, 39% new. A little closed to begin, with coaxing it reveals notes of warm black cherries, black raspberries and kirsch plus touches of mossy tree bark, cumin seed and fragrant soil. Medium to full-bodied, the palate offers an impactful expression of red and black berry layers with loads of savory accents and a solid frame of fine-grained tannins, finishing long and earthy. 340 cases were made.
Wine Enthusiast
From a high-elevation site on a mountain ridge north of Fort Ross, this blustery, full-bodied red shows the extremes of its growing conditions, offering broad, bright and fruity intensity. Juicy black cherry, plum and blackberry fruit meet graphite, dark chocolate and crushed rock, a note of sea spray and forest never far behind.

Tasting Notes

Far Coast Vineyard consistently produces one of our boldest Pinot Noir offerings. The 2018 follows suit with intense cherry cola, blackberry and cocoa aromas. The subtle earth and underbrush characters carry into the flavors along with Asian spice and a broad, lush texture followed by black cherry and blackberry fruits. The persistent finish is distinctly Far Coast.

Vineyard & Vintage Character

Our Far Coast Vineyard is a cool site surrounded by redwood forests, located almost two hours north of the Russian River on a Sonoma Coast mountain ridge. It is an area that some call the “True Sonoma Coast.” Others would simply describe the distant vineyard site as “the middle of nowhere.” Far Coast Vineyard sits just south of the town of Annapolis at 600-1000 feet above sea level. The Goldridge soils at this ridgetop site are well-drained and help to contribute to the sense of minerality and focus in this rare single vineyard Pinot Noir.

Hartford Wines

High Risk, High Reward Single Vineyard Wines

Hartford Family Winery is a family-owned winery located in the Russian River area of Sonoma County. The winery specializes in single-vineyard Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and old vine Zinfandel. The wines produced express the character of their unique vineyards.

The Hartford family bottles wine labeled with two distinct marks—Hartford and Hartford Court. The Hartford Court bottlings are Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The Hartford labeled wines are old vine Russian River Valley Zinfandel.

Family Artisan Winery

Hartford Family Winery was founded in 1994 as a result of Don and Jennifer Hartford’s appreciation for the wines, the people, and the unique vineyards near their Russian River Valley home. Located in the Sonoma County town of Forestville, the winery is about 15 miles from the cool Pacific Coast.

We are located at 8075 Martinelli Road in Forestville, CaliforniaClick here for hours and directions, or call us toll free at 1-800-588-0234 for more information.

High Personality Wines

Making delicious wines of high personality is directly related to the difficult locations of our vineyard sources, the limited production of our bottlings and the varietals we use. “Character through adversity” is an expression that we believe applies to people and grapevines and surviving adversity builds character, and personality, in both.

Single Vineyard and Limited Bottlings

Hartford Family Winery specializes in making wines from single vineyard sites. In recent vintages we have made about 25 different single vineyard bottlings. Small and low-yielding vineyards deliver expressive and personality-rich wine. Our single vineyard Hartford Court Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays total as few as 93 cases, up to about 800 cases. Likewise, our Hartford Old Vine Zinfandels are produced in small quantities. Our single vineyard wines are highly allocated.

Pinot Noir

We love Pinot Noir and in many years make about 15 of them with fruit from the Russian River Valley, Sonoma Coast, Green Valley, Carneros, Anderson Valley, Marin and Oregon appellations. We feel that Pinot Noir makes the most seductive red wine, notable for its supple, silky texture. Pinot Noir is also known for expressing vineyard site characteristics in a transparent manner.

Cool climate Sonoma Coast and Russian River Valley Chardonnay vineyards are singularly expressive. Those that are planted with multiple clones, specially matched to their sites, also reflect the distinctive terroir in these high-risk, high-reward locations.

Old Vine Zinfandel

Our 80-100 year old Zinfandel vineyards are irreplaceable treasures. We source our vineyard-designated Russian River Valley Zinfandels (150-500 cases) from some of the oldest Zinfandel vineyards in California. The complexity and depth of flavors from these vineyards produce the most consistently bold and unctuous Zinfandels found anywhere.

Russian River Valley Chardonnay, Pinot Noir & Zinfandel

In addition to our small vineyard-designated bottlings, we make a Russian River Chardonnay, Russian River Pinot Noir and Russian River Zinfandel that are made from a handful of vineyards each year. These Russian River Vineyard Cuvées are now found in some of the world’s most prestigious restaurant retailers worldwide.
