[vintage 2019]

The vineyard that produced the 2019 Cerro La Isa Viñedo Singular Blanco was planted 115 years ago on clay and limestone soils rich in iron with a mix of Garnacha Blanca, Malvasía and Viura on south-facing slopes at 700 meters in altitude. The bunches were hand-destemmed and the grapes pressed in a small vertical press. The juice was let to settle and put to ferment with indigenous yeasts in new 500-liter French oak barrels, where it was kept with lees for eight months. Surprisingly enough, the wine is not excessively marked by the new wood and comes through like a traditional Rioja white—yes, spicy and smoky but not overwhelmed by the oak. Wines like this are more about texture than aromas. It's medium-bodied and has good freshness, and it has the concentration and terrific balance to develop nicely in bottle. Only 600 bottles were filled in July 2020.

Juan Carlos Sancha has a small project in Baños de Río Tobía (Rioja Alta), one of the coolest zones of Rioja. He has 16 hectares of organically farmed vineyards from which he produces 63,000 bottles spread over 15 different labels.
