Robert Parker: Freshly cut flowers, sweet red berries and ...
Gonet’s NV Brut Rose is one of the more immediate wines in the lineup. Not surprisingly, Chardonnay plays the leading role in this pale-colored, delicate wine. Freshly cut flowers, sweet red berries and a hint of aromatic spices wrap around the generous, caressing finish. The Rose is 90% Chardonnay and 10% Pinot Noir

Philippe Gonet  -The seventh generation

The Gonet family has tended vineyards in the Champagne region for almost two centuries and nurtured a cellar, founded in 1783,  located under the family home in the heart of The Côte des Blancs, in Champagne.

In 1990, Chantal 22 years old and her brother Pierre Gonet 23,  were pressed into taking over the reigns, after the untimely death of their father Philippe Gonet, whom with agronomic science, oenology and  brilliant engineer had moved the Gonet bubbles from the courtyard to the champagne elite.

At the time Chantal had made an eloquent journey at the Ecole Polytechnique Feminine (ETH), then completed her diploma in viticulture and oenology in Beaune at age 23. The awareness of a dual affiliation to a sixth generations winegrower line and to a fabulous terroir, was to bond Chantal and Pierre.

In the  irremediable absence of their father, and with a profound sense of responsibility and the unwavering desire to go further, they reinforced its design and ambition of excellence: to create champagnes, worthy of the mythical terroirs. Imprinted with the family philosophy, Chantal and Pierre created their first wine Roy Soleil. Then came another vintage Belemnita, Extra-brut 3210 and two flashes of inspiration, TER Black and TER Blanc, the latest pure gem of Gonet jewelry.

Pierre and Chantal, with their contrasting yet complementary personalities, share the same vision in making Champagne Philippe Gonet a winemaking reference in Le Mesnil, known worldwide for its exceptional quality wines that express the rich, pure, nuanced and mineral character of their choice terroir: Le Mesnil-sur-Oger.

In Mesnil-sur-Oger, the Gonets grow 11 acres of vines out of 47 acres divided in 45 plots, 11 terroirs including a plot of old vines planted in 1929. They grow in the care of a discerning, responsible and sustainable agriculture: Vines of Chardonnay, king of grape varieties in Le Mesnil, Oger, Vertus for the Côte des Blancs, elected place where the chalk, iodized and saline influences are most strongly expressed, a living flesh, a limestone vase composed of Cocoliths, children of plankton, populated by sea shells, belemnites resembling long archaic squids.

The sea, almost 100 million years ago, left here the miraculous chalk that hydrates and nourishes the vine. This is where the estate flatters its great whites of whites. In order to get a closer insight of the identity of the Champagne region, the Gonets are also watching over their vines, in Vindey, in Fontaine-sur-Ay on the southern slopes of the Montagne de Reims massif, in Le Breuil and La Chapelle Monthodon on the left bank of the Marne valley, in Ludes and Chigny-les-Roses on the north slope of the Montagne de Reims, and finally in Montgueux. Here and there we buy for 5 ha, carefully-grown grapes, pinot noirs and sometimes chardonnays, meticulously selected and resold.
