Sangiovese & Merlot
Tasting note
A blend of Sangiovese and Merlot in equal parts, the 2017 Bertinga comes from a nine-hectare site with calcareous clay soils and alberese rock. This 12,295-bottle production sees various aging vessels, with cement and botte for the Italian grape and steel and tonneaux for the French grape. Thanks to these many elements, the final blend is balanced and bright, with dark color saturation, medium concentration and a more elaborate structure or tannic backbone. Hot-vintage aromas include dark fruit, earth and spice. As the wine opens, it grows in volume and texture.
Bertinga is one the new faces of Chianti Classico. Based in Gaiole in Chanti, the estate farms 20 hectares of vines in three distinct parcels. Only two varieties are cultivated: Sangiovese and Merlot.
The three main vineyards are near Lecchi in Chianti, with light marl and calcareous soils. Both Merlot and Sangiovese are planted here. The three-hectare Vertine Vineyard faces south at the foot of an ancient watchtower. The third parcel is called Adine and is located in a breezy hilltop spot that is perfect for Sangiovese. It measures 4.5-hectares and is where a new winery is being finished.
