Blandlåda - Pavillon Blanc du Château Margaux

White wine production at Château Margaux goes back to the end of the XVII century.

The cellar master at that time recounts how he was one of the first to separate the white grapes from the red during the vinification. Sold in the XIX century under the name « Château Margaux vin de sauvignon », it has existed under the brand name « Pavillon Blanc du Château Margaux » since 1920 and its label has not changed since that date.

The eleven-hectare vineyard is composed only of Sauvignon Blanc. It is situated on a very old plot of the Estate that had long since been planted with red vines and then been dug up because of the high risk of spring frosts. Production techniques, as well as the selection have been completely reviewed since the years 2009/2010 in order to reach a higher level of excellence; only 1/3 of the harvest is bottled, the remaining 2/3 is sold loose.

So the quantity of Pavillon Blanc has been greatly reduced and isn’t more than one thousand cases. Today it benefits from the new wine cellar’s ultra-modern installations designed by Norman Foster.

The finesse, complexity, richness and the length in the mouth of Pavillon Blanc are incomparable for a wine produced from 100% Sauvignon. The very latest vintages, 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2014 in particular, have opened up new horizons in quality, ageing capacity and style which has become more mineral and much more complex. A significant part of the harvest is bottled in magnums which create optimum ageing conditions.

The Wines

1 bottle of Pavillon Blanc du Château Margaux 2014

In one way or another, all the latest vintages of Pavillon Blanc since 2011 have been very good, even great, vintages. In addition to the technical progress made during this period, it must also be recognised that on the whole, the weather conditions have been very favourable for the Sauvignon vines.

2014 doesn’t escape this rule – linked, no doubt, to a remarkable acidity level because of the cool month of August. In fact, the combination of a warm September following a cold August, or vice versa in 2013, allows for both a good level of maturity, and the preservation of a high acidity level. These two features are absolutely necessary for the success of a great white wine. For us 2014 was also the first opportunity to try out the vinification equipment in our new cellar, designed by Norman Foster. It has been years now that we have been refining the minutest details and dreaming of the possibilities available to us… the result is everything we had hoped for because we had never before been able to go so far into the precision of the selection. So the 2014 Pavillon Blanc is an excellent vintage, but there has never before been so little…The wine has just now entered its drinking window.

1 bottle of Pavillon Blanc du Château Margaux 2016

The harvest of the white took place from September 8th to 13th. The acidity level declined quickly due to the beautiful sunny days at the beginning of the month. We know the extent to which acidity is necessary for the freshness and ageing ability of a white wine; the decision to harvest quite early was probably even more decisive in shaping a very good vintage of Pavillon Blanc.

Selection of our wines at the point of blending remains strict, with only a third of the harvest going into Pavillon Blanc 2016 The aromas of this wine are complex and very fine. The entry on the palate is really round, pleasant, the prelude to a long and fresh finish, both mineral and fruity.

It fits perfectly with the lineage of the latest vintages, perhaps even presenting a little more richness on the palate. It is difficult to resist today, but will still gain in complexity in the years to come.

Despite the intense cold snap (a low of -6°C/21.2°F on the night of April 27th), our plots of Sauvignon Blanc were completely spared thanks to our frost-protection sprinkler system.

The precociousness of the Sauvignon Blanc (harvesting took place between August 28th and September 5th) kept it safe from late-season rainfall. The grapes were in perfect condition and fine summer weather allowed them to ripen in the best of circumstances. As a result, the sugars concentrated while retaining excellent acidity which is essential to the balance of a great white wine.

We selected the best from our plots in Virefougasse to blend a wine of complex aromas, roundness on the palate and an extra-long finish with delicate notes of citrus and white flowers. The 2017 vintage is distinctive for its opulence and a very generous fatness that recall the finest Pavillon Blanc vintages.
