Catena Zapata - San Carlos Cabernet Franc 2018

Yields for Cabernet Franc in 2018 were low, so there is less of the 2018 Appellation San Carlos Cabernet Franc, but the style goes back to the style of the 2016 more than the 2017, with very good freshness and very good integration of the oak, which is quite transparent and lets the character of the cool place come through in a more precise way. It's easily identifiable as Cabernet Franc, it's integrated and it makes you salivate. 18,750 bottles produced. It was bottled in October 2018.

Catena is one of the quality leaders in Argentina and it's also a large winery, so they combine quality and quantity. Furthermore, they are one of the pioneers: They were the first to plant vineyards in Gualtallary, which is nowadays considered one of the highest potential zones in the country, but they were deemed crazy when they planted there. The wines are phenomenal, true to their place and vintage, and the accompanying notes merit reading to see what each of their wines is. Comparing 2016 and 2017, it seems like 2017 was better in Altamira and 2016 was a great success in Gualtallary, but there's a lot more information on each wine. They also have a new range of non-sulfur wines called La Marchigiana. Note: A few of these notes were already published several weeks ago, before the wines were offered by the négociants in Bordeaux.

On the spicier, earthier side of the variety, with notes of smoke and tobacco, this is a very good example of cabernet franc from Uco. Here there’s tense texture, very much from the soils with a trace of limestone and an acidity that responds to the logic of mountain wines. It’s perfumed and rich in fruity flavors. Ready now to drink with skirt steak.

This variety looks at home here, showing a fresh edge of light herbs across red berries and red plums. The palate has a very seamless, supple feel and a fresh, elegant yet long finish. Good depth here. Drink or hold.
