The 2020 Châteauneuf Du Pape Val De Dieu checks in as a mix of 60% Syrah, 32% Grenache, and 8% Mourvedre that sees a touch of new oak. It's always the most modern styled release from this estate yet still brings fabulous Provençal character, offering lots of blackberry and assorted darker fruits to go with ground pepper, sandalwood, and violets on the nose. Full-bodied on the palate, it has a terrific sense of freshness, a layered, elegant mouthfeel, and ripe tannins. It's already hard to resist yet should cruise for 15+ years if well stored.

Jeff Leve, The Wine Cellar Insider

Medium-bodied, soft, silky, floral and fresh, with a sweet, and vibrant character to all of the supple-textured, plums, kirsch and earthy cherries on the palate and in the finish. The wine always blends a large portion of old vine Grenache with a healthy dose of Syrah and Mourvedre, which added a lot to the wine this year. Drink from 2023-2034.

Robert Parker Wine Advocate

With a final blend tweaked a bit from what was presented last year, the 2020 Chateauneuf du Pape Val de Dieu showed better from bottle than it had prior. Delicate raspberry and cherry fruit is accented by hints of Earl Grey tea and floral notes. It's medium to full-bodied, showing an attractive tension on the palate, with silky tannins accentuated by crisp acids and a long, lingering finish.

Tasting note

The 2023 Châteauneuf Du Pape Val De Dieu checks in as 40% Grenache, 40% Syrah, and 20% Mourvèdre. One of the darker hued releases in the lineup, its opaque ruby hue is followed by classic notes of blackberries, smoked garrigue, peppered meats, and graphite. It's rich and full-bodied, with building tannins and outstanding length. It doesn't have the same level of elegance as the estate’s other releases, but I suspect that will come with 2-4 years of bottle age.

The team at Château du Vaudieu, led by Laurent Bréchet as well as consultant Philippe Cambie, is firing on all cylinders and continues to produce a bevy of truly world class wines in every vintage. The estate is located not far from Rayas and the wines are rich and powerful, yet never show any signs of rusticity or coarseness. These are elegant, seamless, singular wines. Looking at the two vintages reviewed here, the 2017s showed brilliant with most rating at the upper end of their barrel reviews, which is always a good sign. These are incredibly Provençal, sexy, balanced wines that make the most of the vintage. All the 2018 reds were tasted out of barrel and shows beautifully, with the ripe yet pure style of the vintage. These will certainly be approachable in their youth, yet I suspect also age gracefully given their inherent balance. While 2018 was a difficult year for the whites, you wouldn’t know it by tasting at this estate and along with Saint Prefert and Beaucastel, I think Château De Vaudieu are fashioning some of the greatest whites of the region.

The Val de Dieu, a small valley that gave its name to the estate, represents the core of this cuvée resulting from the blending of the 3 main grape varieties of the estate.

  • Grape variety 62% Grenache noir, 32% Syrah, 6% mourvèdre.
  • Terroir This cuvée is an assemblage of our most beautiful plots of Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre on river stones and red sandstone from the Comtat Venaissin.
  • Harvest After waiting for the optimum ripeness, the grapes were harvested manually between the 10th and the 29th of September 2020.
  • Vinification The grapes are 100% destemmed and crushed and then transfered in a concrete tank. The temperature is maintained at around 25 ° C. during the alcoholic fermentation. The maceration lasted about 30 days during which, pump-over and rack and return are made daily according to the tastings of our oenologist Philippe CAMBIE.
  • Aging Syrahs are aged for 18 months in new oak barrels, Grenache and Mourvèdre in used half-muids (600l).
