Wine Maniacs
This wine reveals intricate layers of flavour, with a crystalline quality that imparts vibrancy. Its fruitiness is pronounced, accompanied by a distinct touch of minerality originating from its limestone terroirs.

The deep purple-hued 2023 Château Mangot is solid, offering medium to full-bodied aromas and flavors of darker, almost blue fruits as well as fresh herbs and sappy flowers. I've struggled with the wines from Mangot over the past few vintages, as I find a distinct, vegetal, celery character that develops in bottle. Whether this is related to something in the winemaking, pick dates, or just something I’m personally sensitive to (I know others think highly of these wines), I truthfully don’t know. Nevertheless, this certainly shows well at this stage. The blend is 65% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Cabernet Franc.
James Suckling
The density of fruit grabs your attention, showing fullness and richness with blue fruit and a hazelnut undertone. Chewy at the end of the polished and solid palate. Structured young wine.

Another beautiful wine from this perpetually improving property, the 2023 Château Mangot delivers aromas of blackberries and mulberries mingled with hints of licorice, pencil shavings, bay leaf and violets. Medium to full-bodied, deep and layered, with a seamless, complete profile and impressive mid-palate density, it's a blend of 65% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon with élevage combining, as usual, new oak, used barriques, foudre and amphorae.
This dynamic 37-hectare estate is located in Saint Étienne de Lisse on clay-limestone soils. It's a single block, ranging from the plateau above the château to the plateau below, with slopes and terraces in between. Farming is organic, with seeded cover crops retained year-round, and vinification is parcel by parcel to produce the best components to inform the optimal assemblage. It's planted with some 75% Merlot, but that's tending to decline at the expense of Cabernet Franc, little by little, as blocks are replanted, and élevage unites traditional barriques with less-oxidative vessels such as amphorae, of which Mangot was a pioneer. The style emphasizes precision and purity of fruit without any obtrusive winemaking signatures. On a qualitative roll, Mangot is one of the best values in contemporary Bordeaux, and the 2023 vintage is another strong effort. The Todeschini family reacted to conditions with rigorous sorting and by shortening the duration of pre-fermentation macerations and alcoholic fermentation, working the ferments even less than usual.

- Vineyard Notes
- Located to the east of the Saint-Emilion appellation, in the commune of Saint Etienne de Lisse, Château Mangot has 37 hectares in one piece, including 34 hectares of vineyard. Facing due south , the combe or "circus" of Mangot offers 4 areas of terroir : foot of the coast, hillsides, terraces and plateaus. These terroirs have 21 plots which stand out between 35 and 86 meters above sea level , the highest point of the appellation. From a geological point of view, the asteria limestone rests on a base of calcareous molasses (soft rock), which outcrops on the slopes (15% slope) around the limestone plateaus . This increased presence of limestone gives Mangot wines density and richness while retaining freshness, tension and minerality .
- Winemaking
- Batch-by-batch vinification makes it possible to adapt the extraction ( reassembly, shedding ). Thus, it is possible to respect the integrity of each grape in its style and personality. These fermentation vats each correspond to a terroir / a grape variety , and will be carefully isolated , after pressing, for the Malo-Lactic fermentation.
