Château Pesquié - Ascencio 2020

Rött vin från Rhône Frankrike

« Ascensio framhäver renheten i Château Pesquiés vackraste Grenache. »

Gismondi on Wine

There was no 2019 Ascensio made, but 2020 was a much more favourable vintage, bringing the single vineyard wine back into the rotation. What a bottle it is. Its name celebrates the tradition of the ascent of Mont Ventoux, which goes back to the XIV century. Ascensio is produced in tiny quantities (less than 3000 bottles), from exceptional vintages, from 50-80-year-old grenache vines. Ascensio is all about the power and attraction of fully ripe grenache mixed with 5% syrah. The colour is red and black, and the nose is an intense rush of black raspberries, dark plums, licorice, minerals, and garrigue. This is a blockbuster grenache but with a fresh and vibrant undercurrent. It is just a baby, but you can drink it now. I advise waiting five to six years before you open the next bottle. Perfect for bœuf bourguignon, venison, duck confit, or more simply grilled sausages. The fruit is farmed manually, and all treatments and composts used in the vineyard are organic. The fermentation occurs in stainless steel, but the aging occurs in a mix of stainless steel tanks, 600 and 300-litre French oak barrels, and concrete. (Anthony Gismondi).

Consistently among my favorite cuvées from this standout producer, the 2020 Ventoux Ascensio comes primarily from 75-year-old Grenache on clay-limestone soil, cropped at just 15 hectoliters per hectare. A blend of 95% Grenache and 5% Syrah, it spent close to three years in concrete prior to being bottled in May 2023. Led by striking notes of black cherries and dried spices and adding slightly herbal and licorice notes, it's full-bodied, concentrated and velvety, with a long, elegant finish.

The accompanying wine reviews include notes taken over the past couple of years, either during visits to the region, or—on one occasion—when I met in the United States with the property's long-term American importer, Eric Solomon. Pesquié is one of Ventoux's benchmark estates, consistently turning out wines that for many years were great values. Now, the Chaudière family is making even greater strides in their pursuit of quality. The Château Pesquié wines are certified organic, while the Le Paradou line of Vin de France wines are not. As in the rest of the Rhône, the 2021 vintage is easily eclipsed by the 2020 and 2022 vintages, but it shouldn't be discounted entirely.

A big, rich, concentrated blend based on 95% Grenache and the rest Syrah, the 2020 Ventoux Ascensio was raised all in concrete vat. It's a powerful, concentrated Grenache revealing fabulous aromatics of ripe blackberries, smoked meats, peppery garrigue, and graphite. Full-bodied on the palate, it's a young, dense, powerful Grenache with velvety tannins, a layered, opulent mouthfeel, and a great finish. It needs 3-5 years of bottle age but will see its 20th birthday in fine form.

Notes of dark cherries, dark plums, stones and black pepper. It’s full-bodied with plush tannins. Textured, layered and peppery with a punchy mid-palate and a vibrant and chewy finish. From organically grown grapes. Vegan. Drink or hold.

95% Grenache & 5% Syrah

Terroir

Ingen ek alls. Buteljerat på Château.

Robert Parker Wine Advocate
