Clos Apalta - Le Petit Clos 2018

Rött vin från Colchagua Valley Chile

« When I first came to Apalta, it struck me – unique geography, climate and old vines that are not grafted. The potential that lay hidden in this incredible place came to reality with the creation of Clos Apalta. »

Petit Clos is based on very old carmenere vines planted on the soils on granitic flatlands and also younger vineyards planted on hillsides around 1999, both in the Apalta Valley. This year's blend has 53% of the two carmeneres, plus 32% of cabernet sauvignon, 12% of merlot, and the rest is petit verdot. The final selection for this cuvée was made, however, in the winery where the softest, most affordable wines were chosen, all after 25 months of aging. This 2018 is succulent, with sweet, ripe flavors and is rich in juicy tones and very fruity, but on the riper side of the spectrum. A delight.

Wine Enthusiast

Dried herbs, green bell pepper, and black fruit are aromatic on the nose of this Carmenère-based blend (which also features a good amount of Cabernet Sauvignon and a splash of Merlot and Petit Verdot). A concentrated palate showcases plum, peppercorn, cumin, oregano, joining well-integrated oak flavors. It has supple tannins and a persistent finish with pleasant baking spices.

The 2018 Le Petit Clos, a second wine born in 2014, was produced with a blend of 53% Carmenere, 32% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Merlot and 3% Petit Verdot from organically and biodynamically certified vineyards even if the bottled doesn't carry the seals. It's ripe and powerful with the Apalta signature, earthy and stony. It fermented with indigenous yeasts in oak vats and matured in French barriques for some 22 months. It's full-bodied with a lush texture and round tannins, a softer version of the 2016. 89,472 bottles produced. It was bottled in October 2020.

'My mother, Alexandra Marnier Lapostolle, always dreamt of crafting the perfect wine. She spent years in search of an exceptional terroir to create a unique wine which would come to take its place as one of the best in the world. This was 25 years ago. Having crossed several continents, she found the picture-perfect location of the Apalta Valley. For her dream to become reality, she let the rolling mountains and sunlit air speak to her, guessed their extraordinary potential, and tamed them. French expertise would refine the breathtaking landscape with hundreds of careful changes and masterful adjustments. Clos Apalta was thus born, an enchanting wine with a shimmering texture and complexity that stimulates the senses and excites the imagination.'

CLOS APALTA

A glass of Clos Apalta opens the doors to a dream. Just retreat into yourself and listen to what it has to offer you. First of all, there is a kind of poetry to its colors, like an iridescent indigo dress with carmine reflections in its folds, then the texture, soft as a summer evening, and lastly, its bouquet; a cascade of aromas, black cherry, blackberry, leather, spices, mocha and cocoa...Take a deep breath and let the smell send shivers down your spine. Then, let yourself be carried away by the fine elegance of its tannins. In this way, slowly, Clos Apalta tells you its history, its terroir, its varietals and its education.

Clos Apalta knows what it is impressing on you – an emotional outburst and sensual vibrations which make sure it is never forgotten.
