The Wine Front

Ramps up the sweet black fruit intensity. A tiny glimpse of violet and game here, of complexity with a meaty and ripe, umami, pastrami character on the palate, a beautifully sour cherry acidity too and fine tannins.

If one can get past the heavy bottle in the age of climate change, this is a stellar vintage of Craggy's Range's premium Hawkes Bay Syrah. It's got a nose you could dive into and swim around in the freshly squeezed blackberry and currant fruit, cracked pepper, cocoa nibs, graphite and warm stone mineral notes. There's plenty of oak here, too, but it should integrate nicely into the wine with time. In the mouth, the fruit continues on a juicy journey, gripped by powerful, fine tannins and interlaced with oodles of dried herbs and spices. This should cellar beautifully. Drink now with decanter and protein at hand until 2040.

The 2016 Le Sol is perhaps the most confident, self-assured expression of Syrah to yet emerge from this benchmark producer. I say that because it no longer relies on weight, power and extraction for its impressiveness, but rather on its wonderful fragrance and elegance. Perfumed notes of violets and cracked pepper lead the way, backed by anise and black cherries. It's medium to full-bodied, with a rich, velvety mouthfeel and tremendous length, echoing with hints of clove, cinnamon and sassafras.

The past year has been full of change at Craggy Range, culminating with the departure of longtime winemaker Matt Stafford and the appointment of Julian Grounds as chief winemaker. Grounds was previously at McHenry Hohnen in Margaret River and is a rising star on the Australian circuit, having been named Dux in 2017 of the prestigious Len Evans Tutorial. As his official first day on the job was the day after my visit to the winery, I met with general manager Aaron Drummond, who presented the winery's prestige range. The following wines were made under Stafford's guidance, so it will be interesting to see how much latitude Grounds is given in tweaking wine styles going forward. The newest releases include the return of two bottlings that have been absent from the lineup since the 2011 vintage: Les Beaux Cailloux Chardonnay and The Quarry Cabernet Sauvignon. Of the two, I found the 2016 The Quarry particularly impressive; alas, both are already sold out at the winery. Note that there will be no Le Sol, Sophia or The Quarry from the 2017 vintage, as the weather failed to cooperate. Production of the 2017 Les Beaux Cailloux, however, inched up to 250 cases. Finally, for visitors to the property, I cannot recommend the redesigned restaurant highly enough. Not only was the cooking of Head Chef Casey McDonald superb, the entire eight-course Hawke's Bay Menu—focused on the local summer produce—was a very reasonable NZ$75. Don't miss it if you happen to be in the region.
