Domaine De Boisseyt - Syrah Confluence 2018

Rött vin från Cote-Rotie Rhone i Frankrike

« Despite being one of the oldest domaines in Chavanay (it was previously known as De Boisseyt-Chol) and having a slick, renovated tasting room situated right on the RN86, last September marked my first visit to this historic domaine. Purchased by Olivier Decelle, owner of Mas Amiel in Maury (Roussillon), in 2017, it's now managed by his son Romain, who previously worked at his family's estates in Bordeaux. »

Grapes

100% Syrah

The grapes are carefully hand-picked when they reach optimum maturity and put into 30 HL tanks with 30% of whole bunches. The malolactic fermentation takes place in barrels with native yeasts. This wine is aged 18 months, 50 % on big wooden barrel and 50% on traditional barrel with 50% of new oak.

Tasting note

Assembled from three plots, including some 40-year-old vines planted on the Rhône's floodplain, the medium to full-bodied 2019 IGP Collines Rhodaniennes Confluence Syrah is a sturdy, chunky Syrah, in contrast to many of the lighter-weight examples that sell under this denomination. Black olives and cassis appear on the nose, while some dusty tannins linger on the finish.

Despite being one of the oldest domaines in Chavanay (it was previously known as De Boisseyt-Chol) and having a slick, renovated tasting room situated right on the RN86, last September marked my first visit to this historic domaine. Purchased by Olivier Decelle, owner of Mas Amiel in Maury (Roussillon), in 2017, it's now managed by his son Romain, who previously worked at his family's estates in Bordeaux. The wines are made across the highway, in a facility shared with winemaking consultant Pierre-Jean Villa, who advised the Decelles on the acquisition. While I reviewed some of the winery's 2019s in May 2021, several others had been bottled just prior to my visit in September, while the IGP wines hadn't been submitted previously. The jewel in Boisseyt's crown is the half hectare of old vines in La Côte Blonde, said to have sparked serious bids from Guigal and Chapoutier when the property was up for sale. The 2019 is especially worth seeking out, although prices are understandably on the rise.
