Domaine De La Vougeraie - Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru La Vougeraie 2019

A modern legend in Burgundy - Ecology, biodynamics and extreme quality control. Most of the wine produced in the small village of Vougeot comes from a single and very famous grand cru vineyard: Clos de Vougeot. The vineyard in its current form dates back to 1336 (when it was first planted by the Cistercian monks). The Cistercian monks tended the land for 680 years and the wine from it became so renowned for its particularly high quality that it eventually became known as the ideal gift for popes and kings if one wanted to achieve something. Clos de Vougeot is the largest "clos" (vineyard surrounded by a wall) in the Cote d'Or. It consists of 50 hectares of vineyards with six types of land owned by 82 owners. That Clos de Vougeot is something very special is perfectly described by Karen Blixen in Babette's Guest: "What's in this bottle, Babette?" she asked in an uncertain voice. "It's not wine, is it?" "Wine, madam?" Babette shouted. "No, ma'am! It's a Clos de Vougeot 1846!". The aroma is like an infusion of red berries such as currants, raspberries and cranberries with hints of rose petals and an underlying fine mineral note. Medium-bodied with layers upon layers of fruit, great depth, fine freshness and silky finish. An incredibly well-balanced, elegant and seductive wine. Top class Burgundy!
