The 2021 Riesling Schlossberg is fresh and pure yet also intense on the complex, spicy and iodine-inflected nose. Rich yet savory on the palate, this is a very intense yet complex and tightly structured Riesling with a long, persistently saline finish. This is a great 2021 Riesling! Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in April 2024.

James Suckling

The bouquet of this great dry riesling is like an essence of golden stone fruits, yet it remains delicate and charming. Stunning concentration and brilliance on the very focused medium-bodied palate. After the first wave of peachy and apricot character comes another of blood orange and Amalfi lemon. So much wet stony minerality! From biodynamically grown grapes with Demeter certification. Drink or hold.

Tasting note

Bottled in December last year, the 2020 Grand Cru Schlossberg Riesling offers pure and refined but also intense, lush and generous tropical fruit with passion fruit, papaya and mango aromas intertwined with the crystalline finesse and flintiness of the Schlossberg granite. Lush and round on the palate, this is a precise, saline and finely grippy Riesling with fine tannins and intense, sustainable fruit with stimulating bitters on the finish. It's salivating due to the really fine and crystalline acidity. 13.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork.

The oldest Grand Cru in Alsace

On a granite bedrock of migmatites, the soil is sandy, rich in minerals, quite shallow at higher altitudes (400m), deeper at the bottom (230m). The richness and diversity of the elements which can be found here (potassium, magnesium, fluorine, phosphorus) determine the finesse and the aromatic complexity of the wines. With its steep slopes facing south, the Schlossberg demands terraced viticulture.

As a renowned terroir, its qualities were recognised as of the XVth century. It was the first terroir of Alsace to be classed as a Grand Cru through the decree law of 1975. As of 1928, the winegrowers of Kientzheim and Kaysersberg had registered all the natural production constraints in a written agreement, which was followed unanimously, and has been since then consecrated by the decree laws on Alsatian Grand Crus.

An excellent granite soil

The Schlossberg is an exceptional terroir for Riesling, on which it bestows a pure expression, a fine structure and remarkable finesse.

Most of our Rieslings are from the Schlossberg, apart from our Riesling Cuvée Théo, originating from the Clos des Capucins.

Our Schlossberg cuvées, lively and elegant, come from the upper part of the hill, where the soils are very shallow. Our Cuvée Colette emerges from the lower part, creating wines that are full and ample.

Our Riesling Schlossberg Cuvée Sainte Catherine and « L’Inédit ! », from 60 year old vines on mid-slope, illustrate the magnificence of this terroir.

After the wet and generally challenging 2021 vintage, it could have been a big harvest in fall 2022. Fruit set was good, but right at the beginning of the growing season, mildew reduced the potential yield at Weinbach by 45%. But who knows what would have happened without that problem, because the vintage was soon to be very hot and also very dry, and those other grapes would only have suffered on the vines, especially on the barren, sun-exposed granite soils in the Schlossberg. Today, it must be said that the 2021s are doing better than perhaps expected, and the 2022s are doing so too, albeit for different reasons. The old vines survived the summer drought surprisingly well, and so the Faller family was delighted with a magnificent 2022 Schlossberg Riesling Ste Catherine. The 2021 was already outstanding yet different in nature. The Gewürztraminer from the limestone grand cru Furstentum is also of terrific quality, as is the Pinot Gris from the oolitic limestone pebbles in the Marckrain. Overall, the 2022s are richer and more powerful than the 2021s and have half a percentage point more alcohol by volume. However, this is not clumsy, as the wines also have an amazing foundation of salt, although the dryness was hardly likely to bring such complexity and structure to the grapes. However that happened, the white wines of both vintages are undoubtedly of excellent quality, with the 2021 showing less alcohol and a straighter, fresher and more mineral character.

When it comes to the reds from old vines and aged in wood for over two years, in particular the 2020 Pinot Noir Le Jardin aux Oiseux from the Furstentum and the 2020 Pinot Noir Altenbourg, Domaine Weinbach has been making great strides for a few years now. Is it because of the increasing proportion of whole grapes? This accentuates the freshness in 2021 and is what makes it possible in the 2020s, which were born in another warm and sunny vintage. The rather cool-grown 2021 Pinot Noir Les Terres du Prince from 50-year-old vines was even fermented 100% with whole clusters. It impresses with its fullness and austerity and shows excellent potential.
