James Suckling
This has a complex nose, with raspberries and blackberries, as well as savory, tarry elements. Fruit-focused. The palate has a dark-berry fruit core with nicely balanced and approachable style. A regional expression of Barossa. Aged for 12 months in 300-liter French oak barrels. A blend of 65% shiraz, 29% grenache and 6% mataro. Drink or hold. Screw cap.
Decanter Magazine
Rich but also measured and balanced, this muscular blend presents lots of textural pitch and roll in its substantial frame, bound by firm oak and tight tannins. Mataro’s barbecued brisket meatiness bites immediately on entry, but then softer tones of bright plum and raspberry from the Grenache and Shiraz start to shine through. The concentration is what you’d expect of this Penfolds staple, and it will last a long time in the cellar.
Falstaff
Dark ruby with purple reflections and subtle brightening on the rim. Background aromas of fresh orange zest along with bourbon vanilla, liquorice, black forest berries and some light, delicate nuances. Juicy, red wild berries and some mint on the palate with ripe, supporting tannins and a long lasting mineral finish with dark nougat notes. A good food companion. Drink now - 2035
Druvor
Grenache Shiraz Mourvedre
Tasting note
Bin 138 draws its inspiration from the wines of Southern Rhône, where Shiraz, Grenache and Mataro (Mourvèdre) are blended in varying proportions to create full-bodied wines possessing rich and heady perfume. Each year fruit for Bin 138 is sourced from the Barossa Valley from well-established vines, including some old vineyards. After fermentation, each varietal is matured separately in mostly seasoned oak hogsheads. The finished blend is assembled just prior to bottling. The first vintage release of this varietal blend was the 1992, labelled ‘Old Vine Barossa Valley’ – it was then elevated to Bin status with the 1998 vintage.
