Sweet spices, crushed hazelnuts, dark berries and plums. Ripe and mellow fruit character with full body and a deep, rich sweet berry core in the middle. Tannins are broad but melted into the wine. Rich and long. Drink or hold.

The 2017 15 Gerações is a field blend from old vines (average age of 65 years) aged for 22 months in 50% new French oak. It comes in at 15.7% alcohol (a bit different than what they predicted when I saw this as a tank sample). You can taste the warmth on this, but I wouldn't say it is hot, exactly. Then, it piles on the tannins. Personally, I think this is going in the wrong direction, but it still has a chance to right itself. It's certainly nowhere near ready or at peak. I'm just not sure it ever will be in balance. Thus, I'm pulling back a bit on this a little, being a bit conservative, which is not to say it might not surprise us (or me). On the good side of the ledger, the fruit is certainly tasty.

Tasting note

All the grapes for all our Douro red wines are foot crushed in old granite “lagares” for 24 hours and then ferment in 5.000 kgs stainless steel tanks between 8 and 12 days. After racking and pressing, the wine is then aged in new, one and two year old French oak 225 litres barriques until the bottling date stated on the label. Van Zellers & Co. 15 Gerações Douro Red is a wine with great aromatic complexity of red fruits from the Douro. 2015 has great grip and power, with an explosion of different red fruits, like raspberries, blackberries and cherries, and a smooth persistence for a delightful finish. It promises to age beautifully in bottle for many years.

Van Zellers & Co. is the new project from Cristiano Van Zeller and his family after he sold Quinta do Vale Dona Maria. It's an old company that was created in 1780 by his ancestors. They resumed the family tradition of making unfortified and fortified wines. They have 15 hectares of vines, owned and rented, and make around 80,000 bottles of unfortified wines and Port. The CV wines are always from the same vineyards, but for the rest, they use a diversity of terroirs. There's a wide range of négoce Ports, some very old; I received unbottled samples of them, as they are bottled to order.
