Pio Cesare

Pio Cesare – in the heart of Barolo and Barbaresco

Pio Cesare winery has been producing wines for 135 years in Piedmont, Italy, and is particularly known for its elegant Barolo and Barbaresco wines.

The estate, one of the oldest in the region, was founded in 1881 by Cesare Pio, a very successful entrepreneur.  He was dedicated to the terroir of the Piedmont region, and to producing wines of the highest quality, and was one of the first to export.

Since then, five generations of the Pios Cesare family have followed, all guaranteeing and protecting continuity in the quality and style of Pio Cesare’s wines.

Pio Cesare winery owns 70 of vineyards, with great exposures in the most highly rated, featuring high-quality hillside exposures intentionally located in multiple different communes of the Barolo and Barbaresco appellations.

Rigorous selection of our grapes and restrained yields in the vineyards – taking into account each vine’s physiological balance and needs – have from the start meant that we produce only limited volumes of each of our wines, always of the highest quality.

Pio Boffa and Cesare Benvenutoowners of the company, still utilize the old but very beautiful cellar in the middle of Alba, the old town dating back to Roman times. In the middle of Pio Cesare's celler, the ancient city walls have been preserved from Roman times. The naturally constant temperatures and appropriate humidity of the cellar has been crucial for the style and quality of the wines over the years.

Generational change has gone well, and the owners has managed to take Pio Cesare into new times and the new world without losing its soul and classic stamp of origin, but with refinement and trimming.
