The voluptuous, exotic and showy 2020 Cirsion was produced with a blend of 88% Tempranillo and 12% Graciano. It has a velvety texture and a special tactile sensation with very fine tannins, chalky but also juicy and with a vibrant finish and very good acidity (is it the Graciano?). This has always been a very special wine, and in the last few years, the oak feels better integrated and folded into the fruit (despite being 100% new barrels), but it does lend a spicy and smoky twist to it. 6,704 bottles produced. It was bottled in April 2022.

The super reliable Roda continues with their focus on R&D (they allocate 7% of their income to it!) and are producing their stable range with the addition of a white from 2019, now in its second year. They work 120 hectares of vineyard, 70 of them owned, mostly in Haro and around it, producing 400,000 bottles per year.

I found very toasty notes in the 2019 Cirsion, the luxury cuvée from Tempranillo that has a special ripeness with more depth and volume. In the warmer, dry and low-yielding 2019, the wine was produced with 88% Tempranillo and 12% Graciano, as the grape ripened thoroughly that year; warmer years tend to have a little more Graciano, something they started in 2011, as the wine was 100% Tempranillo until then. It's dark, almost opaque, and it's very creamy, with high ripeness and 14.5% alcohol and a velvety, luxurious and voluptuous texture. It's oaky. It's still a baby. 10,686 bottles were filled in March 2021.

The modern icon 2021 Cirsion shows some toasty notes and an extroverted personality, aromatic, expressive and open, grabbing you by the throat with abundant notes of ripe black cherries and violets with generous spice, exuberant and with some echoes of carbonic maceration, like wines from the past. It has a medium to full-bodied palate with very fine tannins that make it textured, with a chalky mouthfeel that combines with the juiciness from the ripe fruit. This year, it has up to 14% Graciano (more than ever?) to complement the majority of Tempranillo, from selected vines that achieve a special ripeness. It has 14.5% alcohol and very good freshness and acidity, making it balanced. It combines power with elegance. The fact that it ages in 100% new barrels doesn't show in the aromatics or flavors. It's still very young and seems to be evolving at a slow pace. It's a very complete vintage for Cirsion. 5,587 bottles produced. It was bottled in February 2023.

Roda, a winery created in 1987 in the Barrio de la Estación in Haro, works 120 hectares of vineyards, of which they own 70, mostly in the surroundings of Haro, to produce 400,000 bottles of classical-modern wines. They are releasing wines from 2020, 2021 and 2022 this year.

Tasting note

Represents of one the two profiles of the ripening of Tempranillo: the red fruit. In RODA we look for the parcels that that year have ripened in a red fruit profile, with the expression of the aromas present in the edge of the glass, ready to be felt immediately; with sweet spice notes and a kind freshness. In the mouth the red fruit carries the importance, with a fresh, long, silky, voluptuous and continuous mouth pass. Before vintage 2002, RODA was called RODA II.

It has good aromatic intensity and is very comfortable, with the wood impeccably assembled. The profile is of red fruit and some black flashes can be appreciated. The ripe cherry stands out mixed with the memory of sweet spices and light notes of cocoa. There is a certain floral note of violets, together with the sensation of a bouquet of aromatic plants reminiscent of a walk in the countryside.

It has good volume, it is wide, with very good quality tannin, still somewhat present. It is noticeable that it comes from a great vintage, such as 2021. It is very long and with a lot of presence, highlighting the freshness. A tasty wine, full of nuances.

A Roda with character that has a certain proximity to the profile of Roda I. It will evolve very well over time.
