Giovanni Neri is the first line of Rosso di Montalcino dedicated to the founder of the estate. It comes from Sesta vineyard, purchased in 2017 and planted with 50-year-old Sangiovese vines. The wine ages in tonneaux for 15 months. Aromas of rose, violet, black berries, an almost blueberry scent, then earth and Parma violet in depth. Complex and well packed on the palate, it displays refined velvety tannins and long, delicate acidity. Cherry and violet on the finish.

The 2021 Rosso di Montalcino Giovanni Neri is the current vintage of this wine, which is punchy and bright with a vinous quality that underlines the wine's freshness and its youthful character. The bouquet is extremely clean and transparent, and you can peer through the red cherry fruit and raspberry to crushed stone and chalky dryness. It shows a beautiful color in the glass that matches the aromatic clarity offered to the nose. The only fly in the ointment is a high 15% alcohol content. Some 6,600 bottles were released.

After many, many failed attempts, the Neri family was finally able to buy this gem in 2017, despite claims by the old farmer that

Tasting note

The Casanova di Neri Rosso di Montalcino demonstrates how a Sangiovese in our vineyards in Montalcino can produce substantial wines ready for immediate enjoyment. For us, the Rosso di Montalcino is paramount. For its production we use grapes from dedicated vineyards and ensure that they receive the same attention and care intended for the production of Brunello. The strong identity of this wine is also due to our selection of Sangiovese. It is a wine that spends 12 months in wood.

The 2023 vintage began with a relatively mild winter that saw fewer rainfalls than average. The Spring caused a slight advance in the vegetative restart but the following return of low temperatures has moderated the development of the vines. May and June were characterized by abundant rains that allowed for the accumulation of important water reserves and favored the regular growth of vegetation. The summer months were hot and dry without reaching peaks. Therefore, the ripening of the grapes was slow and constant. The harvest started the third week of September.
