Catena Zapata - Adrianna Vineyard White Bones Chardonnay 2018

Patricio Tapia - Descorchados

This Bones comes from a high part of the Adrianna Vineyard, about 1,450 meters above sea level. Planted in 1992, these soils are alluvial in origin, but very rich in calcareous residues, fossils that are present in the area currently known as Monasterio. The wine was aged for about 16 months under a thin veil of flor, which lends the wine a very special saline component. This is a wine determined by the chalky soil that produces that austere, vertical sensation. A wine that doesn't seem to be made of fruit, but rather of stones, although unlike Whites Stones, this one seems a bit more succulent, a bit riper, although always in the context of these wines full of minerality.

The 2018 White Bones Chardonnay shows a slightly showier personality than the 2018 White Stones, but it's less balsamic and minty than the 2017 White Bones. But this bottling is always a little more aromatic and forward than the more backward White Stones; there are flowers, pollen, herbs and white pepper. But both whites are more about the place and vintage, more about the chalky soils that give them a very specific mouthfeel, with a dry, austere personality. 6,000 bottles were filled in May 2019.

Catena is one of the quality leaders in Argentina and it's also a large winery, so they combine quality and quantity. Furthermore, they are one of the pioneers: They were the first to plant vineyards in Gualtallary, which is nowadays considered one of the highest potential zones in the country, but they were deemed crazy when they planted there. The wines are phenomenal, true to their place and vintage, and the accompanying notes merit reading to see what each of their wines is. Comparing 2016 and 2017, it seems like 2017 was better in Altamira and 2016 was a great success in Gualtallary, but there's a lot more information on each wine. They also have a new range of non-sulfur wines called La Marchigiana.

James Suckling

This is really exuberant at this stage with fantastic aromas of honeysuckle, salt, chalk and dried apples and pears. Full body. Dense, vivid fruit with a linear frame of wonderful, energetic acidity. The energy and length just goes on for minutes. Soulful white. Argentina’s answer to Montrachet. Stares you straight in the eyes. Drink or hold.
