The single-parcel wines from 2018 are among the best I've tasted here, managing to combine remarkable intensity with seductive, approachable textures. These are wines that are delicious now, yet appear capable of drinking well for more than a decade. And don't overlook the Côtes du Rhône offerings, which continue to offer outstanding value. »

A serious value in the category, the 2025 Côtes Du Rhône is all Syrah that was fully destemmed and raised in concrete tank. It gives up deep blackberry fruit, ground pepper, and violets on the nose, and it's medium-bodied and balanced on the palate. Enjoy this delicious effort over the coming 4-6 years. Drink 2026-2032.
Louis Barruol's Château de Saint Cosme, just outside the village of Gigondas, is one of the leading estates in the Southern Rhône. Louis harvested very late in 2024, and his wines are clearly among the best of the vintage. The 2025s are impressive as well, with the purity, perfume, and structure that make these wines so compelling. The classic Gigondas is joined by three single-vineyard Grenaches, with the Le Claux first planted in 1870, the Hominis Fides from sandy soils, and the Le Poste from terraces above the château. All four reds are fermented with whole clusters and raised in barrel, with older wood for the classic cuvée and 15% new oak for the single-vineyard wines. The two all-Clairette Gigondas whites, the Le Poste and Hominis Fides, are terrific too. The Le Poste comes from older vines and shows a touch more precision, but the Hominis Fides is quickly closing that gap. Beyond Gigondas, I was also able to taste Barruol's lineup of Northern Rhône wines, and I've included his all-Syrah Côtes du Rhône, which remains a serious value.

'I always love this cuvée from Saint Cosme, and their 2020 Côtes du Rhône Les Deux Albion is outstanding, giving up lots of peppery, darker fruits and violet notes, medium body, a supple, elegant mouthfeel, and good length on the finish.'
