Still showing brilliantly, the 2022 Châteauneuf Du Pape La Garriguette captures the vintage's sunny yet concentrated, structured style perfectly. Sourced from the Bertaude lieu-dit and based on 75% Grenache, 10% Syrah, 12% Mourvèdre, and 3% Cinsault, it was partially destemmed and aged 22 months in stainless steel. It reveals ripe red and black fruits, black olive, garrigue, and Provençal spices on the nose. Full-bodied, rich, powerful, and structured, it shows a gorgeously textured style that will benefit from 4-6 years of bottle age and will evolve for decades. There are roughly 108 cases produced. Unquestionably one of my favorite producers, Philippe Bravay's Domaine de Ferrand always produces incredibly perfumed, complex, Provençal wines that are never over the top yet loaded with character. The estate is located in the northern part of the appellation and produces a classic Châteauneuf-du-Pape (80% Grenache, 8% Syrah, 8% Mourvèdre, and 4% Cinsault, partially destemmed and aged 22 months in a mix of stainless steel and concrete) as well as the Cuvée La Garriguette, a relatively new cuvée first made in 2022 from the oldest vines planted in 1904 and 1920 in the Bertaude lieu-dit. The Garriguette is one of the more serious, age-worthy wines in the appellation and is worth seeking out. The estate also produces several solid Côtes du Rhône offerings, including an all-Syrah La Ferrande that shows a remarkable Northern Rhône-like character.
