James Suckling

A nuanced, elegant expression of Chinon despite the ripeness from the warm 2019 vintage, which I think helped even though the wine might have gained a Bordeaux sensibility in general. Grilled red pepper, graphite, red berry and meaty notes. Fine, silty tannins and bright acidity make this taste lighter, if not ethereal. Delicious now, but can hold.

Crafted from Cabernet Franc planted on south-facing sandy, clay soils with limestone bedrock, the 2019 Chinon Le Clos de Pallus matured for 18 months in Burgundian barrels and possesses a dark, deep bouquet of dark berries, cassis, oak, spices and licorice intertwined with lead pencil notes. Medium to full-bodied, concentrated and rich, it's dense with structured tannins, an assertive tannic frame and good depth at the core. This rather muscular, dense Chinon requires 6-8 years of cellaring to reach its optimal expression.

Domaine de Pallus är en vingård i appellationen Chinon i Loiredalen. Den gör en rad röda viner från Cabernet Franc, och en enda vit från Chenin Blanc. Historia Godset arrenderades av Jospeh Moron 1882, köptes sedan 1889. Från Josephs död 1919 arrenderades det ut till 1950, då det togs över av Josephs dotter. Det har buteljerat vin sedan 1969. Le Clos de Pallus monopole de Domaine de Pallus is the most familiar plot of the estate, as we all cross it every day to reach the winery. 

With southeast exposure, it is part of the earliest vineyards of the domaine and is, in a way, our reference in terms of cabernet franc. 

To make this cru just the final part of the plot is harvested, representing about 1 ha of old vines planted on the richest area.

The result is a wine in which the character of the old vineyard prevails and where the cabernet franc manages to transmit wisely the most ancestral truths of the plot.
