A note of lemon is all that rises from the glass but the purity of that notion sets the tone. The palate of this wine continues this theme of purity and celebrates it with bouncy juiciness that plays and swirls, while stony depth lies underneath. This wine is juicy, vivid, ripe and fresh. From one of the most iconic Grand Crus of Alsace, Schlossberg which sits on pure granite at 230 - 350 metres, and in this case vines that are 60 years old. It has 5g/l of residual sugar. Buttercup yellow, the nose has a serious, quiet reserve, stony and mineral. Such a contrast to the Greystone. In the mouth it feels bone dry and has riveting acidity and precision. Compared to the Greystone it is almost austere, but there is subtle richness and weight, and though the fruit stays in a firm citrus and apple/pear spectrum, texture and precision drink so beautifully.

This dry riesling has astonishing elegance for the very warm vintage, with super ripe orange and papaya notes that lie far from the mainstream for the grape. Sure, it’s slightly Baroque on the nose, but at the finish it’s all Gothic filigree and intensely mineral, too. From biodynamically grown grapes. Drink or hold.

Tasting note

The Grand Cru Schlossberg Riesling offers a pure, intense and elegant, crystalline and finely concentrated bouquet of bright fruits intertwined with lemon and grapefruit bitters. Lush and round on the generous but refined and balanced palate, this is an intense, saline and very elegant Schlossberg with a long, intense and complex but never alcoholic finish. Very promising classic, linear style.

The oldest Grand Cru in Alsace

On a granite bedrock of migmatites, the soil is sandy, rich in minerals, quite shallow at higher altitudes (400m), deeper at the bottom (230m). The richness and diversity of the elements which can be found here (potassium, magnesium, fluorine, phosphorus) determine the finesse and the aromatic complexity of the wines. With its steep slopes facing south, the Schlossberg demands terraced viticulture.

As a renowned terroir, its qualities were recognised as of the XVth century. It was the first terroir of Alsace to be classed as a Grand Cru through the decree law of 1975. As of 1928, the winegrowers of Kientzheim and Kaysersberg had registered all the natural production constraints in a written agreement, which was followed unanimously, and has been since then consecrated by the decree laws on Alsatian Grand Crus.

An excellent granite soil

The Schlossberg is an exceptional terroir for Riesling, on which it bestows a pure expression, a fine structure and remarkable finesse.

Most of our Rieslings are from the Schlossberg, apart from our Riesling Cuvée Théo, originating from the Clos des Capucins.

Our Schlossberg cuvées, lively and elegant, come from the upper part of the hill, where the soils are very shallow. Our Cuvée Colette emerges from the lower part, creating wines that are full and ample.

Our Riesling Schlossberg Cuvée Sainte Catherine and « L’Inédit ! », from 60 year old vines on mid-slope, illustrate the magnificence of this terroir.
