Coming all from the Rockpile Vineyard in the Rockpile AVA inside the Larger Sonoma County appellation, the 2018 Syrah So Serine sports a deep purple hue to go with a straight-up thrilling bouquet of blueberries, blackberries, smoked game, bacon fat, and spring flowers. Powerful, full-bodied, deep, and intense, it nevertheless stays light on its feet and graceful. A thrill a second, this remarkable Syrah comes close to topping out my scale. Hats off to Jeff Cohn!

The 2018 Syrah So Serine comes from 20-year-old vines in the Rockpile vineyard. It was made with 30% whole cluster and aged 18 months in 100% new French oak. Deep ruby-purple in color, the nose offers red and black fruits, with wafts of thyme, lavender, iron and grilled meats. The full-bodied palate is pure, fresh and mineral-driven, finishing long and perfumed. It deserves another couple of years in bottle. 100 cases were made.

Vineyard: Rockpile, sustainably farmed, vines planted in 1998

Planted at 2010-ft. elevation of granite, loam, clay, quartz, it's the heaviest, rockiest, and steepest vineyard at Rockpile. This elevation puts more stress on the vines producing thick-skinned and small berries. The granite adds a mineral backbone to the weight that the clay creates in the wine.

Vinification: 100% Syrah

The fruit is hand-picked then cold-soaked. I gently foot-stomp the fruit of which 40% is whole cluster, the rest is whole berry and de-stemmed. None is crushed. The wine goes through open-top, then 100% Malolactic fermentation and aged 18 months in large-format 100% new French oak barrels.
