Robert Parker: Round tannins, pleasant and balanced
91+ All three single-vineyard Monastrell bottlings have very similar parameters, showing the hand of a skilled winemaker. The 2018 Juan Piernas comes from a 1.6-hectare plot planted with an old Monastrell clone at 760 meters in altitude and with a north exposition. It's produced like the others, fermentation in stainless steel and élevage in 500-liter barrels for nine months. It's varietal and expressive, with notes of licorice and black fruit, and it has a soft texture and round tannins, pleasant and balanced. It's ready to drink now but also capable of aging for a few years in bottle. 1,500 bottles and 150 magnums were filled in August 2019.
Gassås Wine: Välbalanserat med stort terroiruttryck

Juan Piernas is a good bet if you’re lookingfor a high profile Monastrell wine. We make thewine with grapes from one plot and using only onevariety, this way we ensure we reflect the territoryand variety of grape in the best possible way. Itis a completely self regulated plot, producinglow yields with small, loose bunches, somethingthat is not usual for the Monastrell variety. Weintervene the least amount possible to allowthe vineyard to naturally express its potential.

VITICULTURE Utmost respect for the environment

VINEYARDS Stony clay soil.1,6 ha.

VINIFICATION Processed using gravity in Frenchoak open barrels. Pumped over tosubmerge the grape. Malolacticfermentation in 500 litre barrels andaged for 8 months.

Antonio y Jorge Piernas paseando entre los viñedos

Jorge Piernas Bodegas  -  a family united in their passion for wine

The first vestiges of this winery sprouted thanks to Juan Piernas, the founder's grandfather, who transmitted his passion for wine to his son and grandchildren.

Today his grandson, Jorge Piernas, has the pleasure of ensuring that the hard work and formation of the family business over the past two generations continues to develop and grow, but more so that the family brand delivers upon the aspirations that his grandfather Juan had dreamt of. Jorge is the visible leader along with his brother Fernando, Head of Financial Management and his father Antonio Piernas, Head of Sales and Distribution.

With a Oenology degree Jorge has completed his training at some of the most prestigious wineries in the United States, Argentina and New Zealand. Along with well rounded experience that thrives on tradition and the latest trends in oenology and viticulture, Jorge continues to develop his skills and consolidate what he has learnt through working with three of the best wineries in the Mediterranean, as well as using his expertise to coach several other wineries.

The winery has been designed for small craft production and is designed on one level. Under the premise of "Processing by gravity", a natural process of moving the wine, letting it fall by its own weight and processing the grapes with the utmost respect. The vineyards ranging from 25 to 55 years of age are  located at an altitude of 830 meters, and Jorge Piernas try to turn every single  grape into wine in the most natural and artisanal way – a traditional philosophy where quality prevails over quantity.
