Poggio Antico - Brunello di Montalcino 'Vigna I Poggi' 2020

James Suckling

This Brunello seems to be focused on lush, ripe and overt blueberry and black-cherry character. A little candied as well. Some Mediterranean herbs add complexity. Juicy, medium- to full-bodied palate with crisp, tense acidity and tight yet ripe tannins. It’s more fresh than extracted. A little sticky in the aftertaste at this point. Try after 2025.

Robert Parker Wine Advocate

In the bottle with the green label, the Poggio Antico 2020 Brunello di Montalcino Vigna i Poggi is elegant, soft and nicely fleshed out. It shows soft tannins and a medium-plus mouthfeel with great oak integration. I am impressed by all these wines from this estate, especially this one. The fruit builds on the palate, giving you a long finish and lovely concentration. This is the first single-vineyard wine made after an estate-wide mapping project was concluded to show differences between parcels. The first vintage was 2019. Production is 5,297 bottles.

Poggio Antico General Director Pier Giuseppe D'Alessandro is ushering in a new chapter at this historic estate. For one, construction on a new gravity-flow winery will begin in 2025 and should give more space to single-vineyard vinifications. The estate is also renewing its offering of experiences to wine lovers and visitors. A recent mapping project has identified 15 different soil types across the vineyard holdings, allowing for a more sophisticated plot-by-plot winemaking program.
