San Filippo - Brunello di Montalcino Le Lucere Riserva 2018

Robert Parker Wine Advocate

Opening to extra dark concentration, the San Filippo 2018 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva le Lucére offers a multifaceted bouquet that starts off on a creamy note with Nutella or Kinder chocolate but then quickly transforms into iris root, clean earth, pencil shaving, licorice root, dried cranberry and trail mix. The oak influences are strong, showing hints of toasted coconut at one point, and the wine ends with chalky tannins. There is a lot of complexity, and this is the best edition of this Riserva that I have tasted so far.

Decanter Magazine

Made in years when quantities permit, San Filippo’s Riserva is a barrel selection from the estate’s top site made after one year of ageing. For the 2018 vintage, proprietor Roberto Giannelli was particularly impressed by the elegance of three tonneaux and assembled these for a total of just 2,000 bottles. It seduces with aromas of wet forest, damp earth and red currants enveloped in an oak cloak of mint and cocoa. As it opens, dusty pressed florals nudge through. Tight and tangy with sweet brambly berries and grainy tannins which stain the mouth, the palate presents as midweight to start, before the oak lends some heft, and it becomes denser and drier as it sits in the glass.

James Suckling

Bright, generous, open aromas of raspberries, strawberry ice cream, mint and licorice. The attack is rich, with a full body, graphite minerality, great concentration and savory blood orange flavors in the finish. Very ripe, velvety, well-integrated tannins with crisp acidity. Drink or hold.

San Filippo has been certified for organics since 2013. The estate has 10 hectares of vines over four parcels in the northeast corner of the appellation. The two main parcels are named Le Lucére (which makes its own single-vineyard Brunello designate) and San Filippo.
