The San Filippo 2023 Rosso di Montalcino lo Scorno is an open and expressive wine with lots of cherry fruit and fresh raspberry. The grapes are cold soaked in order to underline that bright primary intensity, and they undergo semi-carbonic maceration. The wine matures in large oak casks for 10 to 12 months. This was a difficult year due to humid growing conditions and mildew pressure, but the winery team handled these challenges. Fruit for this wine comes from a vineyard that is registered to Rosso di Montalcino, and you can expect it to keep similar characteristics over the years as a result. Lo Scorno ends on a lean note in 2023 with tart fruit flavors.

San Filippo has 10 hectares of vines that are divided into four separate parcels near the winery. The Brunellos are born in the Le Lucére and the San Filippo plots, and fruit from the remaining sites goes to the Rosso di Montalcino. All four plots have diverse clay soil profiles, some with ancient marine deposits and some with a greater presence of sand or silt. Vintner Roberto Giannelli has been certified for organics since 2013, and this past year he added solar panels over the winery roof in order to achieve energy independence.

James Suckling

Aromas of restrained red fruit, intense fresh violets, red cherries and pomegranates. Super-refined palate with a medium body, crisp acidity and tight yet ripe tannins. Long aftertaste soaked with flowers. Drink or hold.
