Señorío de Cuzcurrita is the wine made from grapes from within the walled enclosure of the castle and other nearby vineyards. It is the label which most faithfully represents the personality of Cuzcurrita wines.

All the vines are old, unirrigated and goblet-pruned. During veraison the cluster are generally thinned so as to match the amount of grapes per vine to its canopy surface in a ratio of 1.5 to 2.0 m2 per plant.

Señorío de Cuzcurrita is a wine which has fermented at 30 ºC with long maceration in 15,000-litre vats with an excellent geometrical shape. It has outstanding dark black-cherry colour, an intense nose of ripe red-berry fruit and hints of spices from the oak casks. Smooth tannins wrap around the mouth and leave a long, lingering finish.

Castillo de Cuzcurrita   -  A interesting project

Castillo de Cuzcurrita, a 14th century castle with a winery and a 50 years old vineyard (7,5 ha) planted within its walls, is located in the town of Cuzcurrita de Río Tirón, in the westernmost and highest area of Rioja Alta. The Castle, that had been was the possession of lords and nobles entered a new period of revitalized winemaking activity 1999, when it was acquired by Bergé and Company, a Spanish business group.

The new owners began a comprehensive renovation of the castle and the old vines were recovered. This made the start of a interesting wine project, starring winemaker Ana Martín Onzaín, one of the most competent oenologists in Spain. Castillo de Cuzcurrita cultivates 25 hectares of vineyard, unique for its location and old age. Its largest vineyard 'El Cerrado' was planted in 1970, though it has older vineyards on smaller plots such as the 'El Monte', with vines over a hundred years old

Ever since the first vintage was bottled, the winery facilities have been renovated to improve and modernize the production techniques, allowing the wine to be produced in the conditions that its quality requires. The new winery, completed 2005 following the most demanding quality parameters, use gravity to transfer the wine and malolactic fermentation in new and semi-new Bordeaux barrels. The predominant grape is Tempranillo, cultivated in an organic viticulture practice. In 2013 the first wine was made from organically grown grape.

If anything characterizes Castillo de Cuzcurrita it is the combination of tradition with the most modern techniques in the elaboration of their wines.
