James Suckling
Very dense, but also vivid with great elderberry, lavender, licorice and allspice aromas. Impressive concentration and power for the challenging vintage. Magnificent follow through at the long structured finish. Best from 2026. From organically grown grapes.
Lisa Perrotti-Brown - The Wine Independent
The 2021 Hommage a Jacques Perrin is composed of 75% Mourvedre, 10% Syrah, 10% Grenache, and 5% Counoise. Medium to deep garnet-purple in color, it pops from the glass with expressive notes of baked black plums, boysenberry preserves, and fruitcake, followed by hints of tar, black pepper, garrigue, and fragrant soil. The full-bodied palate delivers multilayered fruit with impressive grace, featuring fine-grained tannins and plenty of freshness, finishing long with a peppery lift.
Robert Parker Wine Advocate
The quality of the 2021 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Hommage à Jacques Perrin is impossible to ignore, almost cruising at the same high altitude as the 2020. Aged in foudre and made from the usual blend of 60% Mourvèdre, 20% Grenache and 20% Syrah. The 2021 Hommage à Jacques Perrin displays fragrant violet, blackcurrant, red and black cherry, blueberry, thyme, lavender, licorice and mint aromas. Full-bodied, polished and enveloped in an intricate web of velvety tannins, it concludes with excellent persistence on the complex finish.
Jeb Dunnuck
A blend of 60% Mourvèdre, 20% Grenache and the rest Syrah, the 2021 Châteauneuf Du Pape Hommage A Jacques Perrin is probably the wine of the vintage. Ripe red and black fruits, smoked meats, cedary garrigue, pepper, and other assorted wild aromatics define the bouquet, and it's medium to full-bodied on the palate, with beautiful concentration, building tannins, and a great finish. It already has some accessibility, but there are enough tannins here to warrant 5-7 years of bottle age.
One of the stalwarts of the appellation, Château de Beaucastel continues to produce an incredible array of wines from their estate in the northwestern edge of the appellation. Looking at the vintages reviewed here, the 2022s are ripe, sexy wines that bring to mind 2019 or even 2009. The whites are absolutely brilliant, and while only tasted from barrel, the 2022s will certainly be incredible wines. The 2021s also showed well and possess more depth and density than most in the vintage. In general, Mourvèdre seemed more challenging in 2021, but you certainly wouldn’t have that impression after tasting at Beaucastel. The closest comparison here for the 2021s would be the 2008s, which are balanced, elegant wines that are still drinking beautifully today. The 2021s should be a step up in quality, although I suspect they will evolve along a similar trajectory. Lastly, the estate is wrapping up a massive renovation of the cellar that was built with sustainability front and center and will be using an evaporative cooling mechanism with stored rainwater.
Château de Beaucastel • Hommage à Jacques Perrin 2021
The wine :
Château de Beaucastel has long been regarded as one of the greatest wines in France. It is notorious for its elegance, balance and ageing potential. Beaucastel has an exceptional terroir at the Northern limit of Châteauneuf du Pape, exposed to the Mistral wind. All thirteen varieties of the appellation have been organically grown since the sixties.
Location :
Châteauneuf du Pape, between Orange and Avignon, Château de Beaucastel red is a 70-hectare vineyard.
Terroir :
Château de Beaucastel is 110 hectares, with one single plot at the north of the appellation. The terroir is archetypal of the best terroirs in Châteauneuf: rolled pebbles on the surface, sand, clay and limestone deeper down. The vines are old and have been organically grown for 50 years, which has allowed the roots to grow exceptionally deep.
Beaucastel grows all thirteen grape varieties authorized by the appellation.
Ageing :
Each variety is harvested separately and manually. Vinification takes place in oak fermenters for the reductive varieties (Mourvèdre, Syrah) and in traditional enameled concrete tanks for the Oxidative grapes (all the others). Once the malolactic fermentation is finished, the Famille Perrin blends the different varieties. The blend is then aged in oak Foudres for a year before being bottled.
Cépages :
Grenache : 30%
Mourvèdre : 30%
Syrah : 15%
Counoise : 10%
Vaccarèse, Terret Noir, Muscardin, Clairette, Picpoul, Picardan, Bourboulenc, Roussanne : 10%
Cinsault : 5%
