Domaine Drouhin-Laroze - Gevrey-Chambertin En Champs 2022

Jasper Morris - Inside Burgundy

Robert Parker Wine Advocate

Bottled separately since 2015, the 2022 Gevrey-Chambertin En Champs derives from holdings on the Brochon side that produce a more structured wine. Exhibiting aromas of dark berries, cassis and sweet soil tones, it's medium to full-bodied, with a fleshy core of fruit and rich, powdery tannins that assert themselves on the finish. Hail reduced yields here this year.

Caroline and Nicolas Drouhin are taking the helm at this 11.5-hectare domaine, which boasts an enviable array of prime terroirs in the Côte de Nuits, complemented by a small négociant activity. Macerations are pretty gentle these days, in some cases incorporating some whole bunches, in a mix of enameled steel, stainless steel and cement vats. Bottling occurs in February-March, after two winters on the lees, with a racking from one cellar to another shortly before the next harvest, and barrels derive from a handful of coopers, Tonnellerie Cavin prominent among them.

James Suckling

Excellent depth with adequate toasty spices to the fruit. Juicy and well-structured for a medium- to full-bodied pinot, but the pinot finesse is not lost. Pretty long finish laden with flavor and fine, almost chalky tannins. Quite youthful now. Better from 2027.
