Tasting note
The 2020 Mercurey 1er Cru Clos du Château de Montaigu is the most integrated and compelling wine in the range. Exhibiting aromas of sweet berries, spices, cherries, loamy soil and creamy new oak, it's medium to full-bodied, fleshy and ample, with powdery tannins and vibrant acids.
In 2020, proprietor Agnès de Launay once again picked early, starting on August 18, to avoid exaggerated degrees of alcohol, opting for shorter than usual macerations. In 2019, that approach made for especially supple, giving wines, but in 2020, that approach seems to have translated to a tangier, more tightly wound portfolio built around unusually prominent spines of acidity. If the wines really come together in bottle, which wouldn't surprise me, I may well have underestimated them.
