Tasting note

'The 2020 Shiraz is excellent. It has vibrant yet dark fruit, lashings of five spice and aniseed, garden mint and red dirt, iodine and blood plum. This is spicy, layered, textural, elegant and exciting. The tannins are grippy yet fine, and it is here that the region really comes into its own. The structural integrity of the reds in Frankland is surely what is going to be the basis for the greatness of the region in time. Tannins and shape are naturally present in the wines from here. This is a beautiful wine.'

Established by Judi Cullam and Barrie Smith in 1988, Frankland Estate has, under the guidance of siblings Elizabeth (Lizzy) and Hunter Smith, climbed to the top echelon of producers in the Great Southern. The Estate has built its reputation on the tightly coiled yet textural (and undoubtedly powerful) Rieslings, however it is the Syrah wines that have been gaining in reputation and esteem over the past five or so vintages. The region is just starting to get a proper handle on the potential of Shiraz/Syrah, and it is producers like Frankland Estate that have managed to coax the potential of complexity, power and minerality from the variety in the region. The Organic Certification of both the winery and vineyards in 2009 speaks to the attention to detail that possesses every part of this family-owned winery, and if your eyes are not firmly fixed on Frankland River as a future great (and I mean GREAT) Shiraz-producing region, then you’ve got it all wrong.

Shiraz är gjord av ett urval av Shiraz-druvor (90,1%), kompletterat med Touriga Nacional (4,4%), Mourvèdre (4,4%) och Viognier (1,1%), från 8 olika små paket, som certifierades ekologiskt 2010. utöver den ursprungliga, klassiska Shiraz-klonen som planterades 1988, använder de även 2 nya kloner (470 och 174) som har planterats kontinuerligt under de senaste 20 åren och som tillsammans med den ökande användningen av andra druvsorter tillför ännu större komplexitet och fyllighet till vinet.

Som brukligt på Frankland Estate skördas och vinifieras varje druvsort och skifte separat, med en långsam, sval jäsning (aldrig över 27-28°C, med ca 4,5 % hela klasar och alltid med druvornas egen jäst) i öppet kärl. Detta möjliggör en försiktig omrörning av masken, för att undvika för mycket tanninextrakt. Vinerna från de olika druvsorterna och paketen sätts först ihop efter pressning och den malolaktiska jäsningen. Vinet får sedan lagras i 14 månader på franska träfat på 500 l.

Vinet har en klassisk australisk Shiraz-stil, med fyllighet, fruktkaraktär och läckra kryddor, men bjuder också på gott om krispighet, finess och inte minst charm. Doften och smaken erbjuder de vanliga nyanserna av viol, plommon, björnbär och svartpeppar, men det är elegansen och mineraliteten som dominerar. En underbar australisk Shiraz.
