Robert Parker Wine Advocate
The 2020 Barbaresco boasts an ample set of aromas with wild cherry, blue flower, sweet spice and crushed limestone. As always, the wine paints an exciting and authentic portrait of Nebbiolo, albeit with a little more richness and texture in this vintage. This is especially true in terms of the palate, where the wine offers mid-weight intensity with melting tannins. This ambitious release of 300,000 bottles is slated to hit the market in fall 2023.
Aldo Vacca of Produttori del Barbaresco explains that the nine single-vineyard Barbaresco Riservas were not made in 2018, and therefore that whole program is absent from the estate's 2023 releases. However, there is an exciting new addition to the portfolio, the 2016 Barbaresco Riserva Don Fiorino, which you will find reviewed here.
Wine Enthusiast
Embrace the harmonious blend of cooked cherries infused with an array of mixed spices, accompanied by subtle hints of medicinal herbs and rose water. Soft and rounded, yet possessing a discernible edge, this wine presents a fruit-forward profile loaded with flavors of cherry and raspberry, all the while, complemented by refreshing acidity. Its polished and elegant character develops throughout the bottle and will age deep into the future while still being great today.

Ripe red in color, the 2020 Barbaresco boasts a nice balance of purity and ripeness, with lifted spice notes of dried cherries, peppercorn, pine, and anise. An impressive Barbaresco, it’s medium-bodied and offer sanguine richness and yet has a weightless feel. It’s propelled forward through the palate, with bright orange peel notes, vibrant acidity, fine tannins, and a long finish. It has more richness in this vintage as well as having a lot of finesse and elegance to offer. It’s an exceptional entry Barbaresco. Drink 2026-2040.
As one of the most important and quality-minded co-operatives in the world, Produttori del Barbaresco is currently composed of 51 growers across Barbaresco. Founded in 1894 by Domizio Cavazza, the headmaster of the Royal Enological School of Alba, it was originally a collection of nine growers. Today the operations are managed by Aldo Vacca, who was formerly the assistant to Angelo Gaja for 15 years.

Tasting note
The 2020 vintage began with a relatively mild and dry winter, temperatures above average and precipitations and snowfalls few and far between.
The first part of spring was relatively dry and sunny, ensuring a homogeneous resumption of plant growth, with bud breaking starting at the beginning of March. A couple of rainy days in April and more so in May when the climate was unstable climate and continued until late June. On the one hand, the advantage built up at the beginning of spring was worn out by the slowing down in plant growth, while on the other hand, the accumulation of water in the soil, combined with not overly high temperatures during the summer, prevented water stress issues. As far as production volume is concerned, green harvest was necessary in the summer to balance a relatively abundant crop.
The “heat wave” came in August with two weeks of day temperature above 90°F. Some rain at the end of the month helped to cool down the climate helping a more balance ripening of the grapes. First three weeks of September were mild with little temperature excursion between night and day, last week brought cooler nights and helped a better aromatic concentration.
Nebbiolo proved to be in excellent condition when it was ready for picking at the very beginning of October. Growth was constant, rather than exponential, with nice balance of aromas and tannins. The early start of the season and the good water supply through the summer kept a good acidity level while also allowing excellent sugar accumulation.
In conclusion, also considering grape ripening control data, the 2020 vintage in Barbaresco can be said to be extremely good with points of excellence, not as full bodied as some of the vintages before, but complete and complex enough to produce medium-long ageing potential wines.
