James Suckling

Complex and open already, with aromas of slate, dried rosemary, grilled sage, lemon peel, sour cherries and cardamom. Supple and full-bodied with sleek and fine tannins. I like the olive-stone and herbal undertones. Firmer, mineral finish. Try after 2025.

This is a medium to full-bodied Sangiovese with dark and savory tones that are folded into dark fruit and plum. The San Filippo 2018 Brunello di Montalcino le Lucére shows ample aromas of tart cherry and dried raspberry that give the wine a bright first impression. In little time, a second wave of toasted aromas and spice are added to the presentation. The finish is smooth, lean and polished. This is a release of 15,000 bottles.

San Filippo has been certified for organics since 2013. The estate has 10 hectares of vines over four parcels in the northeast corner of the appellation. The two main parcels are named Le Lucére (which makes its own single-vineyard Brunello designate) and San Filippo.

Production area The vineyard is located on the East side of Montalcino, at the attitude of 280/3100 meters a.s.l. East exposed, the soil is “Pliocene marine deposits” type, clayey soil with yellowish brown silty sand and sandstone, medium to fine grain interspersed with thin levels of residual Pietraforte conglomerate.

Harvest The grapes are handpicked at the beginning of October

Vinification and Ageing The alcoholic fermentation is conducted in thermo-regulated stainless-steel vats, maceration times are: 2 days of cold maceration at 10°C then 10-12 days at 25-28 °C during and post fermentation. The malolactic fermentation took place in cement vats. Afterwards is aged for 12 months in barriques and tonneaux, then 12/16 months in 20-30 HL oak cask. Lastly, aging in bottle for 10 months.
