Shiraz & Viognier
Shiraz från gamla torrodlade Barossa-vingårdar blandas med Viognier, vilket kompletterar styrkorna och komplexiteten hos dessa individuella fruktpaket, samtidigt som det ger det resulterande vinet en ytterligare dimension.
Även om det är underbart aromatiskt, uppvisar RunRig också en kraft och latent rikedom som gör den mer lik de enormt koncentrerade vinerna som kommer från den soldränkta kullen Hermitage – Syrahs historiska hem och några av världens mest kraftfulla och längsta levande viner.
Torbreck är namnet på en skog nära Inverness, Skottland. Du hittar mer än en förbigående nick till kelterna i våra namnkonventioner för vin, inklusive denna hänvisning till "RunRig"-systemet för jorddistribution bland höglandsklansmän. Deras vitt spridda anläggningar sköttes gemensamt snarare än som en gård...inte olikt denna kompletterande blandning av Shiraz och Viognier som gör summan av delarna större än helheten.
Tasting note
The 2022 RunRig typifies everything I appreciate and value about the 2022 vintage. It is silky and open, seamless and fresh. Like the 2018 vintage, the 2022 is open and available, more so than the 2021. It is so pretty. It's gorgeous. I feel it could be stylistically likened to 2004. It's excellent. 15.5% alcohol, sealed under natural cork.
The Torbreck vertical here was the reason for traveling to Barossa during this week, and so it was with great anticipation that I embarked upon a full vertical of the RunRig—the Shiraz-Viognier wine. While there, I was also able to taste the Les Amis and the Hillside Grenaches, in keeping with the broader context of Grenache here. The notes for the Runrig wines speak for themselves; but suffice to say, the winemaking team spans a litany of great producers, starting with Dave Powell, the founder (established 1994), and ending with current winemaker Ian Hongell and his long-serving team of winemakers and viticultural team led by Nigel Blieschke. On-hand the day of this tasting were the current analyses for the wines, and where the numbers were relevant, they have been included in the notes. Suffice to say, the alcohols vary widely over time, as do the expressions of the wines in each vintage. My favorites were the early wines for their charm and their deliciousness, however this is undoubtedly aided and abetted by their age, which had worn down any edges and had rendered them elegant. I have no doubt that this is where the young wines will go in time, but if you have any old bottles of RunRig, I'd advise drinking a bottle—not out of necessity, as they have plenty of time left in them, but because they are lovely wines to drink.

high international acclaim driven by their power and sense of place. So here, the Grenache wines are made, as is typical for Torbreck, absolutely in their own style, unbending to the trends of the time. These are powerfully ripe, structural wines, some of which are certain to put hairs on the chest, but all of which are balanced and complex as well. The Les Amis (you don't say "lay ah-mee," rather "lez ah-mee," for what it's worth) hails from a single vineyard in Greenock, grown on low-yielding, dry-grown vines, and it matured for 18 months in French oak barriques, a significant portion of which were new. The Les Amis vineyard sits at 320 meters in elevation, atop a strata of blue stone, schist and ironstone over a clay bedrock. By contrast, the Hillside Vineyard Grenache is from dry-grown bush vines on the estate property just north of the town of Lyndoch. The wine is much lighter in style, owing to partial whole-bunch fermentation and to the élevage in large-format French oak foudre. The soil composition of the site comprises mostly dark red clay scattered with shale, quartzite and ironstone.
A bit of the history: From successful beginnings in 1994, the company went into receivership in 2002 and was purchased by Australian businessman Jack Cowin. In 2008, ownership was then passed on to American billionaire Peter Kight (owner of Quivira Winery in Dry Creek Valley, Sonoma). In 2013, founder and winemaker Dave Powell finished up at Torbreck, although much heartache and controversy surrounded the outcome—his operational role and involvement in the company came to an end. In 2016, Ian Hongell (winemaker) and Nigel Blieschke (viticulturist) began their tenure. The impact of Powell cannot be overstated, but nor is he the only piece to the puzzle. The stories surrounding Powell continually blur the line between myth, legend and man, and yet one thing remains constant throughout all: his passion, vivacity and intensity spurred on many great winemakers who worked with him to go on and do great things. It could be said then that, from colorful beginnings, we now exist in a comparatively peaceful era, one that recognizes the solid foundations that were laid down in the beginning, around old-vine vineyards and a sense of "place" in the wines and which continually builds upon these central tenets.
