Vinous

The 2024 Châteauneuf-du-Pape is dark and brooding, unveiling black cherry, subtle licorice and spice-tinged tones. Full-bodied, concentrated and wholly elegant, the 2024 presents beautifully, lending distinctive peppery nuances and savory depth. Finesse takes centre stage on the long, complex finish.

James Suckling

The perfume is spectacular with rose petal, cinnamon, raspberry and blueberry yet always so subtle. It's medium-bodied with ultra-fine tannins and a seamless texture. It's 14% alcohol. The counoise whole cluster is opening up this wine with 10% counoise, 30% mourvedre, 30% grenache, 5% syrah, 5% cinsault, 10% other reds and 10% whites. The roussanne is fermented with mourvedre, the syrah with bourboulenc and the grenache with clairette. A dream to drink now. A Chateauneuf for today but a tribute to the past with such finesse. From biodynamically grown grapes with Demeter certification. Drink or hold.

Black cherries, pepper, Provençal garrigue, and floral notes all emerge from the 2024 Châteauneuf Du Pape, a classic beauty that shows the fresher, elegant style of the vintage yet has terrific richness. Some classic Mourvèdre leather and spice show up with time in the glass, and it's medium to full-bodied, with a pure, elegant mouthfeel, ultra-fine tannins, and integrated acidity. Based on 13 varieties, including 30% each of Mourvèdre and Grenache, it was aged 18 months in foudre before being bottled in June of 2026. It's another remarkably pure, fine, elegant wine here that has the capacity to drink well today yet will keep for 30 years if you're so inclined (and have good storage). Drink 2026-2056.
An undeniable benchmark of the appellation, Château de Beaucastel produces an incredible array of wines from their estate on the northern edge of the appellation. While I wasn't able to taste any 2025 reds, the 2024s are all terrific here and well worth buying, with the Hommage À Jacques Perrin clearly one of the top wines in the vintage. The 2025 whites are just as good, and they're rich, ripe, and powerful yet still show balance and elegance.

Technical sheet

Always one of the highlights of my visits in Chateaneuf du Pape, the cellars at Beaucastel were a bit dusty when I arrived, as the long-awaited expansion had just gotten underway. Built using the latest practices in sustainability and conservation, it's expected to be completed in 2024. The 2021 Syrah had just been picked, and the expectation was that the Grenache would be harvested beginning the following day. Something worth noting, although the family doesn't actively promote it, is that Beaucastel's farming has been certified organic since 1966, and the vineyards have been farmed along biodynamic principles since 1974 (although not certified as such).

Marc Perrin and his cousin César Perrin, who conducted the tasting, are high on the prospects for 2020, which they compare to 2016. "It was a beautiful summer, all the way through October," said César.

"What I really like is the finesse of it," said Marc. "With global warming, Mourvèdre is performing better and better here."

Their opinions aside, don't discount the bottled 2019s, which are also excellent. The 2019 Hommage à Jacques Perrin is simply stupendous, and not to be missed by serious collectors.

As always, my visit here included a substantial lineup of the Famille Perrin wines from other appellations, which will be included in the next installment of my Southern Rhône coverage.
