Tasting note
Aromas of cherries, blackberries and sweet new oak introduce the 2020 Mercurey 1er Cru Les Veleys, a medium-bodied, youthfully compact wine with powdery tannins and tangy acids underpinning its sweet core of fruit. It will reward a bit of patience.
In 2020, proprietor Agnès Dewé du Couëdic once again picked early, starting on August 18, to avoid exaggerated degrees of alcohol, opting for shorter than usual macerations. In 2019, that approach made for especially supple, giving wines, but in 2020, that approach seems to have translated to a tangier, more tightly wound portfolio built around unusually prominent spines of acidity. If the wines really come together in bottle, which wouldn't surprise me, I may well have underestimated them.
