The Produttori del Barbaresco 2022 Barbaresco records a relatively high 15% alcohol content, yet the wine remains happily elegant and poised throughout. Small berry aromas of cassis and wild cherry are framed by expressive floral notes of lilac and earthy iris root, which feel especially vivid in this youthful Nebbiolo. The wine delivers immediate depth and finesse, balancing the natural richness of the warm vintage with the precision and freshness that define the cooperative's style. Fermented in stainless steel and aged in large oak botti, this release shows impressive harmony and varietal purity across its substantial production of 320,000 bottles.

Aldo Vacca, the longtime managing director of Produttori del Barbaresco, retired at the end of 2025 after decades leading the cooperative and helping shape its international reputation. Enrico Vezza, a grower-member of the cooperative, serves as its president, representing the families who farm the vineyards supplying the winery.

Produttori del Barbaresco will not produce its series of single-vineyard Riservas in 2024, with the vintage limited to Barbaresco and a Langhe Nebbiolo bottling only. Harvest notes from the cooperative indicate that 2022, despite an extremely hot and dry growing season that reduced yields by about 30%, produced surprisingly balanced and pleasurable wines. By contrast, 2021 offered growers near-perfect conditions, comparable to the celebrated vintages of 2011 and 2016.

In 2022, the estate will only be producing a small quantity of the single-vineyard Riservas, with the majority of fruit going into the 2022 Barbaresco. It pours a jeweled ruby red color and reveals a seductive yet very pure nose of cherry cordial, crushed roses, sweet herbs, and peppery spice. Medium-bodied, it has supple ripeness in the fruit yet wonderful clarity in its tannins and acidity, giving the wine excellent definition and balance. Roughly 133,333 bottles were produced. Produttori del Barbaresco did not produce any Riserva bottlings in 2022, with all of the fruit going into the Barbaresco. While that often makes the classico a strong value in years like this, the wine performs exceptionally well within the framework of the vintage. Some producers feel 2022 favored blending over single sites, and while I would not apply that broadly across the region, this estate’s 2022 makes a compelling case for that idea.

Bright and overtly fruity, this is full of intoxicating violets, cinnamon, blood oranges and black cherries, expressing mint and balsamic depth. Full-bodied with a soft, smooth attack, dusty yet velvety tannins and brilliant acidity. The chocolaty finish shows licorice and a mouth-coating texture. Delicious and balanced. Drink or hold.
